We characterize the maximum controlled invariant (MCI) set for discrete-time systems as the solution of an infinite-dimensional linear programming problem. In the case of systems with polynomial dynamics and semialgebraic state and control constraints, we ...

Analog optical signal processing has dramatically transcended the speed and energy limitations accompanied with its digital microelectronic counterparts. Motivated by recent metasurface?s evolution, the angular scattering diversity of a reciprocal passive ...

This paper deals with input adaptation in dynamic processes in order to guarantee feasible and optimal operation despite the presence of uncertainty. The proposed adaptation consists in using the nominal optimal inputs and adding appropriately designed inp ...

Motivated by applications in computational anatomy, we consider a second-order problem in the calculus of variations on object manifolds that are acted upon by Lie groups of smooth invertible transformations. This problem leads to solution curves known as ...

Extensive amenability is a property of group actions which has recently been used as a tool to prove amenability of groups. We study this property and prove that it is preserved under a very general construction of semidirect products. As an application, w ...

In this thesis, we consider commercial buildings with available heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, and develop methods to assess and exploit their energy storage and production potential to collectively offer ancillary services to th ...

The operation of dynamic processes can be optimized using models that predict the system behavior well, in particular its optimality features. In practice, however, process models are often structurally inaccurate, and on-line adaptation is typically requi ...

The significant progress that has been made in recent years both in hardware implementations and in numerical computing has rendered real-time optimization-based control a viable option when it comes to advanced industrial applications. At the same time, t ...

This thesis addresses the problem of industrial real-time process optimization that suffers from the presence of uncertainty. Since a process model is typically used to compute the optimal operating conditions, both plant-model mismatch and process disturb ...

A novel method for approximating structured singular values (also known as values) is proposed and investigated. These quantities constitute an important tool in the stability analysis of uncertain linear control systems as well as in structured eigenvalue ...

Dynamic optimization can be used to determine optimal input profiles for dynamic processes. Due to plant-model mismatch and disturbances, the optimal inputs determined through model-based optimization will, in general, not be optimal for the plant. Modifie ...

A disk that is free to rotate about its axis and connected to a torsional spring behaves as a damped oscillator when twisted and released. The initial elastic energy is periodically turned to kinetic energy and it gets progressively dissipated by the visco ...

A powerful approach for dynamic optimization in the presence of uncertainty is to incorporate measurements into the optimization framework so as to track the optimum. For nonsingular control problems, this can be done by tracking active constraints along b ...

In this Note we prove that in two and three space dimensions, the symmetric and non-symmetric discontinuous Galerkin method for second order elliptic problems is stable when using piecewise linear elements enriched with quadratic bubbles without any penali ...

We extend here a “bottleneck” flow model derived earlier for incompressible fluids flowing under creeping flow conditions [Despois, J. and Mortensen, A: Acta Materialia 53 (2005) 1381] to flow regimes where inertial losses are no longer negligible, causing ...

In this paper, we present a new mechanical model for biped locomotion, composed of three linear pendulums (one per leg and one for the whole upper body) to describe stance, swing and torso dynamics. In addition to a double support phase, this model has dif ...

We consider DG-methods for 2nd order scalar elliptic problems using piecewise affine approximation in two or three space dimensions. We prove that both the symmetric and the non-symmetric version of the DG-method have regular system matrices also without pen ...
