In this thesis, I present an experimental molecular beam surface scattering study of dynamical processes involved when HCl molecules are scattered from Au(111) and Ag(111) surfaces. I investigated vibrational excitation, translational inelasticity and diss ...

We perform a systematic DMRG investigation of the two natural spin-1 generalizations of the spin-1/2 Majumdar-Ghosh chain, the spin-1 J(1)-J(2) Heisenberg chain, where J(2) is a next-nearest-neighbor Heisenberg coupling, and the spin-1 J(1)-J(3) model, whe ...

This work uncovers the implications of the estimation of exogenous inactivation rates for E. coli after the initial lag phase, and presents a strategy for the determination of the second-order inactivation rate constants (k2nd) of these bacteria with relev ...

This thesis presents combined experimental and theoretical investigations of nanoscale, surface-supported magnets based on rare earths (RE) to understand and control the magnetic properties down to the scale of single atoms. We present the effects of adato ...

Excited-state dynamics and electronic structures of Al and Ga corrole complexes were studied as a function of the number of beta-pyrrole iodine substituents. Using spectrally broad-band femtosecond-resolved fluorescence upconversion, we determined the kine ...

With the advent of spintronics, significant research effort is made to realize efficient injection, transport, manipulation, and detection of spin. The material platforms and device architectures suitable for this purpose 3D topological insulators (TIs) ar ...

Cooperativity is key in defining the shape (i.e., gradual, abrupt, or hysteretic) of thermally driven spin transitions in magnetic switches. Despite its importance, there is very little information on its atomistic origin, which hinders the rational design ...

Cu(I)-phenanthrolines are an important class of metal-organic molecules that exhibits much promise for solar energy harvesting and solar-driven catalysis applications. Although many experimental studies have been performed calling for high-level simulation ...

We report the results of ultrafast transient absorption studies of tetrakis(l-pyrophosphito) diplatinate(II), Pt-2(mu-P(2)O(5)H2)(4) (Pt(pop)) and its perfluoroborated derivative Pt-2(mu-P2O5(BF2)(4) (Pt(pop-BF2)) in water and acetonitrile upon e ...

Time-reversal symmetry and broken spin degeneracy enable the exploration of spin and valley quantum degrees of freedom in monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides. While the strength of the large spin splitting in the valance band of these materials is n ...

The time-window for processing electron spin information (spintronics) in solid-state quantum electronic devices is determined by the spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation times of electrons. Minimizing the effects of spin-orbit coupling and the local magn ...

We measure UV and IR spectra in the gas phase for EuOH+, EuCl+, and TbO+ ions, which are produced by an electrospray ionization source and cooled to similar to 10 K in a cold, 22-pole ion trap. The UV photodissociation (UVPD) spectra of these ions show a n ...

Valence and spin states of Fe were investigated in a glass of almandine (Fe3Al2Si3O12) composition to 91 GPa by X-ray emission spectroscopy and energy- and time-domain synchrotron Mossbauer spectroscopy in the diamond-anvil cell. Changes in optical propert ...
