This thesis presents an efficient and extensible numerical software framework for real-time model-based control. We are motivated by complex and challenging mechatronic applications spanning from flight control of fixed-wing aircraft and thrust vector cont ...

This work presents a wind tunnel experimental study on the effect of the leading edge flapping on the aerodynamic performance of a spinnaker. Four J80-class spinnaker models, combining two different assembling structures (panel layout) and two different sa ...

A methodology for designing cylindrical origami with different patterns and different cross-sectional shapes is presented. Planar and cylindrical origami with curved-crease patterns are designed and proved to be foldable and developable regardless of the t ...

Insect flight is characterised by complex time-dependent flows in response to the unsteady wing movements. Biological fliers exploit the unsteady flow fields to modulate aerodynamic forces, thereby displaying unmatched flight performance, especially in hov ...

In animal locomotion, either in fish or flying insects, the use of flexible terminal organs or appendages greatly improves the performance of locomotion (thrust and lift). In this article, we propose a general unified framework for modeling and simulating ...

The attosecond quantum beat of an electronic state superposition was captured in SiH4 using soft-X-Ray attosecond transient-absorption spectroscopy. Its decoher-ence and revival, induced by non-adiabatic vibrational dynamics, were reproduced using MCTDH ca ...

The vast majority of problems that arise in aircraft production and operation require decisions to be made in the presence of uncertainty. An effective and accurate quantification and control of the level of uncertainty introduced in the design phase and d ...

Biological flapping wing fliers operate efficiently and robustly in a wide range of flight conditions and are a great source of inspiration to engineers. The unsteady aerodynamics of flapping wing flight are dominated by large-scale vortical structures tha ...

Actuator placement is a fundamental problem in control design for large-scale networks. In this paper, we study the problem of finding a set of actuator positions by minimizing a given metric, while satisfying a structural controllability requirement and a ...

Dragonflies achieve agile maneuverability by flapping four wings independently. Different phase angles between the flapping forewing and hindwing have been observed during various flight modes. The aerodynamic performance depends on phase angle control, as ...

Cutting edge electron microscopes allow to probe the optical excitations in nanostructures with subangstrom spatial and femtosecond temporal resolution. In this study we discuss the prospects of probing the ultrafast out-of-equilibrium dynamics of plasmoni ...

Most logic synthesis algorithms work on graph representations of logic functions with nodes associated with arbitrary logic expressions or simple logic functions and iteratively optimize such graphs. While recent multilevel logic synthesis efforts focused ...

Wind-tunnel experiments were performed to study the performance of a model wind turbine and its wake characteristics in a boundary layer under different operating conditions, including different yaw angles and tip speed ratios. High-resolution particle ima ...

Perching in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) offers the possibility of extending the range of aerial robots beyond the limits of their batteries. It has been a topic of intense study for multirotor UAVs. Perching in winged UAVs is harder because a kinetic e ...

Quantum computing could potentially offer faster solutions for some of today's classically intractable problems using quantum processors as computational support for quantum algorithms [1]. Quantum processors, in the most frequent embodiment, comprise an a ...

In this study, the physics and effectiveness of active yaw control under various wind conditions are investigated systematically, based on wind tunnel experiments and a new analytical wind farm model. The power and wake velocity measurements of a three-row ...

This paper presents image velocimetry measurements on turbulent flows adjacent to a permeable bed made of randomly packed glass particles. For measuring flow velocities inside the bed, the refractive index of the glass particles was matched with that of th ...

Although the versatility of photodynamic therapy (PDT) is well established, the technical aspects of light delivery systems vary significantly depending on the targeted organ. This article describes the optical properties of a light and drug delivery syste ...

Large-eddy simulation is used to investigate very-large-scale motions (VLSMs) in the neutrally stratified atmospheric boundary layer at a very high friction Reynolds number, . The vertical height of the computational domain is m, which corresponds to the t ...

Reports that promote persulfate-based advanced oxidation process (AOP) as a viable alternative to hydrogen peroxide-based processes have been rapidly accumulating in recent water treatment literature. Various strategies to activate peroxide bonds in persul ...
