A new far-infrared polarimeter diagnostic for the tokamak a configuration variable (TCV) is under construction at CRPP. It uses two FIR lasers at 432.5 mu m, optically pumped by a 120 W continuous wave CO2 laser. The two FIR cavities will be detuned such t ...

Relaxor-ferroelectric single crystals PZN-xPT [(1-x)Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-xPbTiO3] and PMN-xPT [(1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-xPbTiO3] continue to attract much interest due to their anomalously large piezoelectric properties (d33 > 2000 pm/V; k33 > 90%) when poled ("do ...

Strain-field measurements and in situ polarized light microscopy have been used to evidence a hysteretic, irreversible electric-field-induced transition to a quasimonodomain rhombohedral phase in 111-oriented, pseudo-orthorhombic PZN-8PT [0.92Pb(Zn1/3 ...

The pronounced optical in-plane anisotropy of a suitably designed nonpolar GaN-based microcavity, mainly inherited from the valence-band complexity of wurtzite semiconductors, allows the coexistence of two different light-matter coupling regimes along orth ...

It is demonstrated that for classical perovskites, such as BaTiO3; SrTiO3, and PbTiO3, electrostrictive strain induced by an electric field may not obey traditionally considered "extension along the field and contraction perpendicular to it" behavior if th ...

We demonstrate charge-mediated and non-volatile control of anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) in a dilute magnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)(As, P) with an integrated polymer ferroelectric gate. The persistent electric field associated with switchable polariz ...

The influence of the uniaxial bias stress on the piezoelectric properties of tetragonal BaTiO3 and PbTiO3 monodomain crystals is modeled in the framework of the phenomenological Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory. It is shown that tensile and compressive st ...

Information about the poloidal field inside the plasma and about the current density profile is essential for the understanding of the behavior of tokamak plasmas. The poloidal field outside the plasma edge is easily measured by a set of magnetic coils, wh ...

We present a digital holographic microscope that permits one to image polarization state. This technique results from the coupling of digital holographic microscopy and polarization digital holography. The interference between two orthogonally polarized re ...

Many ferroelectric solid solutions exhibit enhanced electromechanical properties at the morphotropic boundary separating two phases with different orientations of polarization. The mechanism of properties enhancement is associated with easy paths for polar ...

Polarized fluorescence spectra were recorded in the vicinity of the Se and Br K edges on crystals of the selenated protein aldose reductase in complex with a brominated inhibitor molecule. The X-ray absorption, refraction and resonant scattering tensors as ...

This thesis explores the properties of the transmission of light through subwavelength slits in metal films. Theoretical and experimental studies on the transmission through slits in metals are presented. In addition, the potential use of these slits for d ...

We present a method to measure continuous-wave ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra based on the core-level absorption of circularly polarized x rays. The technique is demonstrated by using a monochromatic x-ray beam incident on an yttrium-iron-garnet sam ...

The transverse piezoelectric coefficient (d(31)(star)) has been calculated for tetragonal barium titanate (BT) and lead titanate (PT) cut along nonpolar axes, over a range of temperatures, using the phenomenological Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory. It is ...

This review discusses recent advances in understanding origins of large piezoelectric properties in some ferroelectric materials. In particular, it addresses the role of polarization rotation and monoclinic phases. It is suggested that the polarization rot ...
