Iterative Learning Control (ILC) is a technique used to improve the tracking performance of systems carrying out repetitive tasks, which are affected by deterministic disturbances. The achievable performance is greatly degraded, however, when non-repeating ...

This paper describes a new method to estimate the standstill position of permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). The method is based on the anisotropic properties of permanent magnets and is therefore referred to as a magnetic anisotropy method (MAM). ...

Many electric power generators use gas turbines as power sources. Typically they are connected to the turbines through a mechanical gearbox in order to adapt their synchronous speed to the optimal rotation speed of the turbine, which is very often much hig ...

There has been a significant growth in freight traffic over the last few decades in Europe. The Alps, located in the middle of North-South route, are particularly sensitive regarding this evolution because of their topographic and climatic characteristics. ...

A method is proposed to assess the natural ventilation potential (NVP) of the Basel Region, Switzerland, by taking into account the most comprehensive set of factors involved in natural ventilation. These factors are either driving forces, such as wind pre ...

Initially, linear motors have been particularly dedicated to transportation systems. Nowadays, linear motors are meant to replace a system using a rotating motor and a transmission to realize a linear movement. With linear motors the performances increase ...

The paper presents a simplified analytical method to design a small two-pole slotless brushless dc motor. Using only a few approximations, the motor analytical model is formulated to generate a system of equations. The system can be solved analytically, pr ...

This paper presents a method to model and optimize brushless dc motor for a solar airplane. In order to obtain the optimal solution for the given specifications, all free parameters are analyzed globally in one go. For this, the commercial optimization sof ...

Friction modeling of a high-precision positioning system using linear permanent magnet synchronous motors is investigated. The friction force is measured precisely by some specific experiments to eliminate the parasitic ripple force. The experimental data ...

Ultrasonic motors have received much attention these last years, in particular with regard to their modeling and their design principle. Their operating principle is based on piezoelectric ceramics that convert electrical energy into mechanical energy in t ...

Ultrasonic motors are a good alternative to electromagnetic motors in medical robotics, since they are electromagnetically compatible. Estimating speed instead of using encoders reduces cost and dimension of the robot on the one hand and increases reliabil ...

This paper presents the sensitivity analysis of an ultrasonic linear motor using design of experiments (DOE) and the finite element (FE) optimization of its deformation amplitude. A first ultrasonic linear motor prototype has been built at the laboratory. ...

In recent years the use of solid state frequency converters is rapidly increasing in the industrial and power plants where electric machines are installed, since it allows variable speed operations for the electric system, thus becoming a key factor which ...

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the general population. Cardinal symptoms of Parkinson's disease are resting tremor, rigidity, akinesia and bradykinesia and in advanced stages, gait impairments, postural inst ...

This paper presents an algorithm to correlate audio and visual data generated by the same physical phenomenon. According to psychophysical experiments, temporal synchrony strongly contributes to integrate cross-modal information in humans. Thus, we define ...

A double-stage feedback control structure for a double-stage mechanical system, with a single optical metrology is developed to reach the nanometer accuracy at high bandwidth over large displacements. A piezoelectric stack actuator is used for fine positio ...

Buildings should be comfortable and healthy. They are a shelter for their occupants and should not be a source of problems. The architect widely influences the indoor environment quality by his design,. Ensuring a good indoor environment through appropriat ...

The dielectric response of ferroelectric-dielectric composites is theoretically addressed. Dielectric permittivity, tunability (relative change of the permittivity driven by dc electric field), and loss tangent are evaluated for various composite models. T ...

Robotic interfaces can dynamically interact with humans performing movements and can be used to study neuromuscular adaptation. Such devices can produce computer controlled dynamics during movement and measure the interaction force and movement trajectory. ...
