The tension–tension fatigue behavior of pseudo-ductile hybrid bonded-bolted double lap basalt composite joints, composed of pseudo-ductile adhesives and adherends with multi-directional fiber architecture, was experimentally investigated. The fatigue damag ...

Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) have emerged as versatile and promising devices for a multitude of applications, including soft robotics, haptic interfaces, and artificial muscles. DEAs are an interesting soft actuator technology due to their high en ...

In this work, 99.999% pure magnesium (Mg) single microcrystals have been deformed in [0001] compression (c-axis compression) and [10 (1) over bar0] tension (c-axis contraction) conditions at room temperature and under loading rates ranging from 5 x 10(-4) ...

One of the main concerns about the use of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) materials in civil engineering structural applications is the potential reduction of their stiffness- and strength-related properties when exposed to elevated temperature. The first p ...

A logconcave likelihood is as important to proper statistical inference as a convex cost function is important to variational optimization. Quantization is often disregarded when writing likelihood models, ignoring the limitations of the physical detectors ...

We tackle safe trajectory planning under Gaussian mixture model (GMM) uncertainty. Specifically, we use a GMM to model the multimodal behaviors of obstacles' uncertain states. Then, we develop a mixed-integer conic approximation to the chance-constrained t ...

Laser based additive manufacturing allows to build a designed shape layer-by-layer, offering versatility and flexibility to many metallurgical sectors. The fast cooling rates and repeated heat cycles depending on the laser and scanning parameters are not e ...

The two-dimensional (2D) debonding behavior of GFRP/balsa sandwich panels presenting embedded circular disbonds at the face sheet/core interface was experimentally investigated. The bottom of the panels was fixed and out-of-plane quasi-static tensile loads ...

Describing bedload transport as a stochastic process is an idea that emerged in the 1930s with the pioneering work of Einstein. For a long time, the stochastic approach attracted marginal attention, but the situation has radically changed over the last dec ...

Permanent post-tensioned ground anchors are widely used for the stabilization of different structures in civil engineering. Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons have been proposed to replace steel tendons in ground anchors to solve the durability ...

Two applications of post-tensioned CFRP strap elements recently developed at the Composite Construction Laboratory (CCLab) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) are presented. The first application concerns post-tensioned non-laminat ...

Internal fluid pressure often plays an important role in the rupture of brittle materials. This is a major concern for many engineering applications and for natural hazards. More specifically, the mechanisms through which fluid pressure, applied at a micro ...

Ferromagnetic shape memory alloys (MSMA) exhibit magnetic field- and stress-induced twinning when processed into single crystals, but are brittle and difficult to shape. Embedding slender single crystalline MSMA elements into a polymer matrix can thus prov ...

The larger structures are, the lower their mechanical strength. Already discussed by Leonardo da Vinci and Edme Mariotte several centuries ago, size effects on strength remain of crucial importance in modern engineering for the elaboration of safety regula ...

In many design codes for roadway bridges, fatigue design involves passing a load model over an influence line for a critical location on the bridge and then determining the resulting nominal stress range. For fatigue design in the finite-life domain, this ...

This paper discusses two projects on post-tensioned glass beams, performed at EPFL and DTU, respectively. In these projects small scale glass beams (length of 1.5m and 1m) are post-tensioned by means of steel threaded rods tensioned at the beam ends. The p ...

In this paper, an exact solution is derived for the characterization of thermal stresses in a single-fibre composite of finite length. All the required boundary and interfacial conditions of the thermo-elastic problem are thus satisfied exactly. The propos ...
