Many applications, such as content moderation and recommendation, require reviewing and scoring a large number of alternatives. Doing so robustly is however very challenging. Indeed, voters' inputs are inevitably sparse: most alternatives are only scored b ...

Parliament dynamics might seem erratic at times. Predicting future voting patterns could support policy design based on the simulation of voting scenarios. The availability of open data on legislative activities and machine learning tools might enable such ...

A logconcave likelihood is as important to proper statistical inference as a convex cost function is important to variational optimization. Quantization is often disregarded when writing likelihood models, ignoring the limitations of the physical detectors ...

In the domains of machine learning, data science and signal processing, graph or network data, is becoming increasingly popular. It represents a large portion of the data in computer, transportation systems, energy networks, social, biological, and other s ...

This thesis is composed of two essays that study the effectiveness of shareholder democracy. In the first essay, I analyze the firm value implications of shareholder-initiated proposals. I show that managerial resistance precludes half of shareholder-init ...

Poor decisions and selfish behaviors give rise to seemingly intractable global problems, such as the lack of transparency in democratic processes, the spread of conspiracy theories, and the rise in greenhouse gas emissions. However, people are more predict ...

While technology is often claimed to be “democratizing”, the technologizing of society has more often yielded undemocratic or even anti-democratic outcomes. Is technology fundamentally at odds with democracy, or is it merely a rich and infinitely-adaptable ...

We study the phenomenon of intransitivity in models of dice and voting. First, we follow a recent thread of research for n-sided dice with pairwise ordering induced by the probability, relative to 1/2, that a throw from one die is higher than the other. We ...

Voting can abstractly model any decision-making scenario and as such it has been extensively studied over the decades. Recently, the related literature has focused on quantifying the impact of utilizing only limited information in the voting process on the ...

We consider the problem of distributed average consensus in a sensor network where sensors exchange quantized information with their neighbors. We propose a novel quantization scheme that exploits the increasing correlation between the values exchanged by ...

Distributed graph signal processing methods require that the graph nodes communicate by exchanging messages. These messages have a finite precision in a realistic network, which may necessitate to implement quantization. Quantization, in turn, generates er ...

Quantize-Map-and-Forward (QMF) relaying has been shown to achieve the optimal diversity-multiplexing trade-off (DMT) for the slow fading single-antenna relay channel, regardless of whether the relay is full-duplex or half-duplex. A key reason for the DMT o ...

Distributed graph signal processing algorithms require the network nodes to communicate by exchanging messages in order to achieve a common objective. These messages have a finite precision in realistic networks, which may necessitate to implement message ...

We consider the problem of distributed average consensus in a sensor network where sensors exchange quantized information with their neighbors. In particular, we exploit the increasing correlation between the exchanged values throughout the iterations of t ...

Accurate segmentation of lymph nodes in head and neck (H&N) CT images is essential for the radiotherapy planning of the H&N cancer. Atlas-based segmentation methods are widely used for the automated segmentation of such structures. Multi-atlas approaches a ...

Scholarly studies and common accounts of national politics enjoy pointing out the resilience of ideological divides among populations. Building on the image of political cleavages and geographic polarization, the regionalization of politics has become a tr ...

Modularity is at the core of bioinformatics. Here we focused on two different building blocks: protein domains and exons. While protein domains enable us to study the protein‚s functions, exons allow us to understand the evolution of the former. However, a ...

In this dissertation, I address the political and moral geography of Swiss federal participatory votes for the period between 1981 and 2014 to re-investigate some of the fundamental questions left open in urban sciences: how and why socio-ethical, moral an ...

We consider online predictions of vote results, where regions across a country vote on an issue under discussion. Such online predictions before and during the day of the vote are useful to media agencies, polling institutes, and political parties, e.g., t ...

Vision sensor networks and video cameras find widespread usage in several applications that rely on effective representation of scenes or analysis of 3D information. These systems usually acquire multiple images of the same 3D scene from different viewpoin ...
