Volumetric 3D printing is a novel technique that offers promising new perspectives in tissue engineering. In volumetric 3D printing, photosensitive gels or liquids are solidified by projecting light patterns via reverse tomography. Recent results show that ...

The present invention relates to a method for analyzing cellular responsiveness to hormones or drags in a tissue sample based on an alginate-based 3D ex vivo culture system for normal and malignant tissue microstructures and uses thereof. ...

Endemic human coronaviruses (hCoVs) 229E and OC43 cause respiratory disease with recurrent infections, while severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-CoV-2 spreads across the world with impact on health and societies. Here, we report an image-based multicy ...

Macrocycles have excellent potential as therapeutics due to their ability to bind challenging targets. However, generating macrocycles against new targets is hindered by a lack of large macrocycle libraries for high-throughput screening. To overcome this, ...

Our aim is to develop a 3D model unit of cardiac muscle: an in-vitro analog of the trabeculae carneae found in vivo. As a base hydrogel matrix for cardiomyocyte culture in 3D, we develop a blend of decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) and fibrin. Thi ...

The form and structure of biological tissues define their function. The emergence of tissue morphology during development is one of the wonders of nature. Cells mechanically probe and manipulate their surroundings while constructing structures from the ext ...

Smart nanofibrillar constructs can be a promising technological solution for many emerging and established fields, facilitating the potential impact of nano-scale strategies to address relevant technological challenges. As a fabrication technique, electros ...

Inspired from additive manufacturing's success, the structuring of biocompatible materials through bioprinting has become a growing field of research in the past fifteen years. It opened the door to a plethora of applications ranging from the fabrication o ...

Cryogels are macroporous materials that display remarkable properties, such as high pore interconnection, large surface to volume ratio, and high mechanical stability, making them good candidates for 3D cell culture. However, shaping cryogels remains chall ...

The complex cellular microenvironment plays an important role in determining cell fate. For example, stem cells located in a microenvironment termed niche integrate a wide variety of extrinsic cues to take distinct fate choices. Capturing this multiple-inp ...

We present a 3D-printing technology allowing free-form fabrication of centimetre-scale injectable structures for minimally invasive delivery. They result from the combination of 3D printing onto a cryogenic substrate and optimisation of carboxymethylcellul ...

In a typical high-throughput drug screening (HTS) process, up to millions of chemical compounds are applied to cells cultured in well plates, aiming to find molecules that exhibit a robust dose-response, as evidenced for example by a fluorescence signal. I ...

Laser-induced optical breakdown (LIOB) is a multiphoton process which can be used for selective removal of material. It revolves around the creation of a plasma in the focal volume of a beam, and requires very high peak intensities in the order of the GW.c ...

KRAB-containing zinc finger proteins (KRAB-ZFPs) are early embryonic controllers of transposable elements (TEs), which they repress with their cofactor KAP1 through histone and DNA methylation, a process thought to result in irreversible silencing. Using a ...

The common and persistent failures to translate promising preclinical drug candidates into clinical success highlight the limited effectiveness of disease models currently used in drug discovery. An apparent reluctance to explore and adopt alternative cell ...

The in vitro recapitulation of tissue and organ function represents one of the main objectives of tissue engineering. Developments in this field have numerous applications, from alleviating the shortage of donor organs to providingmore representative pla ...

The impedance of biological material changes with frequency, a phenomenon that has been discovered more than 100 years ago. It is due to the fact that the cell membrane acts as a capacitor which filters out currents at low frequency and lets them pass at h ...

Biological cells modulate their behavior, express genes, proliferate or differentiate in response to mechanical strains ranging from 1% to 20%. There currently exists no technique to apply strain to many targeted individual cells in a larger culture in ord ...

A major problem in traditional cell culture methods, such as Petri dishes and culture flasks, is the very simplified artificial environment around the cells. Traditional cell culture methods lack features of the native cell niche, such as gradients and cel ...

Synthetic biomaterials play an important role in regenerative medicine. To be effective they must support cell attachment and proliferation in addition to being non-toxic and non-immunogenic. We used a suspension-adapted Chinese hamster ovary-derived cell ...
