We study the global well-posedness and asymptotic behavior for a semilinear damped wave equation with Neumann boundary conditions, modeling a one-dimensional linearly elastic body interacting with a rigid substrate through an adhesive material. The key fea ...

Macroscopic fundamental diagrams (MFDs) have been widely adopted to model the traffic flow of large-scale urban networks. Coupling perimeter control and regional route guidance (PCRG) is a promising strategy to decrease congestion heterogeneity and reduce ...

The cavity method is one of the cornerstones of the statistical physics of disordered systems such as spin glasses and other complex systems. It is able to analytically and asymptotically exactly describe the equilibrium properties of a broad range of mode ...

The electrostatic screening properties of ionic fluids are of paramount importance in countless physical processes. Yet the screening behavior of ionic conductors out of thermal equilibrium has to date mainly been studied in the context of thermoelectric p ...

Ride-sourcing services offered by companies like Uber and Didi have grown rapidly in the last decade. Understanding the demand for these services is essential for planning and managing modern transportation systems. Existing studies develop statistical mod ...

An alternative approach for real-time network-wide traffic control in cities that has recently gained attention is perimeter flow control. Many studies have shown that this method is more efficient than state-of-the-art adaptive signal control strategies f ...

Microscopic traffic flow models can be distinguished in lane-based or lane-free depending on the degree of lane-discipline. This distinction holds true only if motorcycles are neglected in lane-based traffic. In cities, as opposed to highways, this is an o ...

Last-mile delivery in the logistics chain contributes to congestion in urban networks due to frequent stops. Crowd-shipping is a sustainable and low-cost alternative to traditional delivery but relies heavily on the availability of occasional couriers. In ...

We study an energy market composed of producers who compete to supply energy to different markets and want to maximize their profits. The energy market is modeled by a graph representing a constrained power network where nodes represent the markets and lin ...

Mainstream approaches to design spatial architectural forms that are structurally relevant consist either in adapting well-known and catalogued conventional types or in searching for close-to-optimum solutions of well-defined problems. Few means exist to e ...

We study the spontaneous out-of-plane bending of a planar untwisted ribbon composed of nematic polymer networks activated by a change in temperature. Our theory accounts for both stretching and bending energies, which compete to establish equilibrium. We s ...

Ridesourcing has driven a lot of attention in recent years with the expansion of companies like Uber, Lift, and many others around the world. Companies use mobile applications connected through the internet to match drivers and their passengers real-time. ...

Many transportation markets are characterized by oligopolistic competition. In these markets customers, suppliers and regulators make decisions that are influenced by the preferences and the decisions of all other agents. In particular, capturing and under ...

Ratchet transport systems are widespread in physics and biology; however, the effect of the dispersing medium in the collective dynamics of these out-of-equilibrium systems has been often overlooked. We show that, in a traveling wave magnetic ratchet, long ...

We study a canonical model of decentralized exchange for a durable good or asset, where agents are assumed to have time-varying, heterogeneous utility types. Whereas the existing literature has focused on the special case of two types, we allow agents' uti ...

Biochemistry, ecology, and neuroscience are examples of prominent fields aiming at describing interacting systems that exhibit nontrivial couplings to complex, ever-changing environments. We have recently shown that linear interactions and a switching envi ...

Decentralized signal control of congested traffic networks based on the Max-Pressure (MP) controller is theoretically proven to maximize throughput, stabilize the system and balance queues for single intersections under specific conditions. However, its pe ...

The energy Casimir method is an effective controller design approach to stabilize port-Hamiltonian systems at a desired equilibrium. However, its application relies on the availability of suitable Casimir and Lyapunov functions, whose computation are gener ...

Dispersion of objects in a fluid phase can be classified as solutions (Gibbs free energy of mixing, Delta G(mix) < 0) or suspensions (Delta G(mix) > 0) depending on their thermodynamic stability. Small objects tend to form solutions, larger ones suspension ...

This work investigates the benefits of a two-layer adaptive signal control framework combining multi-region perimeter control (PC) with distributed Max Pressure (MP) control in selected network intersections. Motivated by MP’s questionable performance in o ...
