This short paper proposes time-series x-ray tomography as a valuable tool for quantifying freezing processes in a remoulded clay. As an example, three simple closed system (i.e., no water entry) experiments are performed and analysed, all of which were fro ...

In mountain regions, steep streams play an important role in water and sediment connectivity. In these highly dynamic systems, water flow features, sediment fluxes and stream morphologies are tightly interlinked over a broad range of temporal and spatial s ...

A turbidity current is a turbulent, particle-laden gravity current that is driven by density differences resulting from the presence of suspended sediment particles. The current travels downslope, bearing a large amount of sediment over a great distance, a ...

Facial paralysis is a challenging condition that alters a patient's ability to express emotion and communicate. Restoring facial movements thus has crucial implications for the patients' quality of life. This publication introduces an approach for artifici ...

Microbial life in glacier-fed streams (GFSs) is dominated by benthic biofilms which fulfill critical ecosystem processes. However, it remains unclear how the bacterial communities of these biofilms assemble in stream ecosystems characterized by rapid turno ...

Electrocatalysis has been proposed as a versatile technology for wastewater treatment and reuse. While enormous attention has been centered on material synthesis and design, the practicality of such catalyst materials remains clouded by a lack of both stab ...

We present a numerical model for the simulation of 3D mono-dispersed sediment dynamics in a Newtonian flow with free surfaces. The physical model is a macroscopic model for the transport of sediment based on a sediment concentration with a single momentum ...

Incipient valley formation in mountainous landscapes is often associated with their presence at a regular spacing under diverse hydroclimatic forcings. Here we provide a formal linear stability theory for a landscape evolution model (LEM) representing the ...

Steep streams on rough beds are generally characterised by supercritical flow conditions under which antidunes can develop and migrate over time. In this paper, we present flume experiments that we conducted to investigate the variability of antidune geome ...

Progressive conversion of tropical rainforests to agricultural monocultures in South East Asia increasingly affects landscape types such as riparian areas. The impacts of conversions on soil organic matter (SOM) vary with changing landforms. However, this ...

Upstream migrating antidunes develop in streams under supercritical flow conditions. These bedforms are often organised in trains (i.e. sequences of well-developed antidunes). In shallow flows over coarse sediments, the dynamics of a single antidune can be ...

Life has most likely originated as a consequence of processes taking place in non-equilibrium conditions (e.g. in the proximity of deep-sea thermal vents) selecting states of matter that would have been otherwise unfavorable at equilibrium. Here we present ...

Bridge failure, due to local scour at bridge pier foundations, has become a critical issue in river and bridge engineering, which might lead to transportation disruption, loss of lives and economic problems. A practical solution to prevent bridge collapses ...

Understanding the real aging of Diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC) is key to predict their useful lifetime. This work comprises a detailed study of a commercial DOC in its unused state and after use in vehicle for 288,000 km. The activity of the samples was ...

In the literature, the task of dysarthric speech intelligibility assessment has been approached through development of different low-level feature representations, subspace modeling, phone confidence estimation or measurement of automatic speech recognitio ...
