We demonstrate the use of both pixelated differential phase contrast (DPC) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and off-axis electron holography (EH) for the measurement of electric fields and assess the advantages and limitations of each techn ...

The microstructure evolution associated with the cold forming sequence of an Fe-14Cr-1W-0.3Ti-0.3Y2O3 grade ferritic stainless steel strengthened by dispersion of nano oxides (ODS) was investigated. The material, initially hot extruded at 1100 degrees C an ...

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a rapidly growing class of materials that offer great promise in various applications. However, the synthesis remains challenging: for example, a range of crystal structures can often be accessed from the same building b ...

Martensitic crystallography plays a vital role in the texture evolution and mechanical properties in Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) shape memory alloys when subjected to deformation. However, their microstructural changes during deformation are not well known and ...

Me3+8Ge, being a Weyl semimetal, shows a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE), which decreases slowly with an increase in 8 from 0.1 to 0.4. However, AHE in this compound remains significantly large in the whole range of 8 because of the robust nature of the ...

Barocaloric (BC) materials provide cheaper and more energy efficient alternatives to traditional refrigerants. Some liquid alkanes were recently shown to exhibit a colossal BC effect, matching the entropy changes in commercial vapour-liquid refrigerants. D ...

Structure determination of materials is key to understanding their physical properties. While single-crystal X-ray diffraction is the gold standard for structures displaying long-range order, many materials of interest are polycrystalline and/or disordered ...

Titanium has become in recent years an interesting material in many applications that require a combination of high mechanical properties and low density. It has the peculiarity of undergoing an allotropic transformation at 882°C. Below this temperature, ...

Ternary-based titanium nitride (TiN) thin films have drawn attention toward rational applications due to their wear resistance, high hardness, and corrosion resistance. The influence of Mo content on the structural, tribo-logical, and mechanical properties ...

The growing number of diseases linked to aberrant phase transitioning of ribonucleoproteins highlights the need to uncover how the interplay between multivalent protein and RNA interactions is regulated. Cytoplasmic granules of the RNA binding protein Bica ...

Although W. L. Bragg's law can be easily derived for beginners in the field of crystallography, its interpretation however seems to cause some difficulties which lies essentially in the relation between the concept of lattice planes and the unit cell const ...

We present a systematic investigation of {10 (1) over bar2} extension twinning mechanism in single crystal magnesium micropillars deformed over seven orders of magnitude of strain rate, from 10(-4) to 500 s(-1), revealing how the accommodation of newly for ...

The project aims to validate some recent theoretical developments on the deformation twinning nucleation mechanism in HCP metals through small-scale mechanic experiments. To this end, a systematic investigation of the mechanical response of pure magnesium ...

Laser-powder bed fusion (L-PBF) has gained significant research interest, not only for its profound advantage of producing near-net shape complex geometries of metallic parts, but also for the possibility of producing tailored microstructures. Here we expl ...

This study investigates the microstructure, phase formation, and mechanical properties of LC3-50 based auto-claved aerated blocks. The microstructure and phase formation is studied using SEM-EDS and X-ray diffraction techniques. The fresh and hardened prop ...

YMgNi4-based alloys exhibit reversible hydrogen absorption and desorption reactions at near room temperature. Here, we report that Co-substituted YMgNi4-based alloys exhibited higher hydrogen contents and lower hydrogen absorption and desorption reaction p ...

Structure determination techniques are an essential tool to investigate and understand molecules, especially in biology, where functionality crucially depends on structure. The dominant high-resolution methods, such as transmission electron microscopy and ...

A Finite Element Model is developed to represent the mechanical behavior of WC-10 wt.% Co in compression tests. In this research, realistic three-dimensional model is obtained by slicing a sample by Focused Ion Beam and reconstituting it, resulting in two ...

Light coupling in waveguides has been extensively investigated in a variety of contexts, from photonic integrated circuits to biosensing and near-eye displays for augmented reality. Here, narrowband diffraction is reported using a Fano interference effect ...

Red gold alloys owe their warm and attractive colour to the combination of gold and copper atoms. Thanks to their good mechanical properties and resistance to corrosion, red gold alloys are used in luxury industries as well as in dentistry. Around the equi ...
