We investigated the reaction chemistry of metal contacts to GaN during annealing using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). GaN decomposition was estimated, using XPS, to occur in N-2 annealed Ni-alloy contacts at 550 degreesC. The reaction was greatly accelerated by the catalytic effect of Au and Pt. The decomposition was correlated with the rapid degradation of electrical properties during annealing. The results suggest that high-temperature applications may be critically limited by the degradation of

Novel, highly sensitive piezoelectric acoustic sensors based on partially unclamped Pb(Zr-x, Ti1-x)O-3 (PZT) coated cantilever and bridge have been fabricated by silicon micromachining. High sensitivity at low frequencies (5-100 Hz) has been achieved by patterning very narrow slits (3 to 5 mum) around the structures. A typical response of 100 mV Pa-1 and a noise equivalent pressure of 1.6 mPa Hz(1/2) at 20 Hz have been measured using a 10 pF charge amplifier. Stress compensation, dry etching and integration

Mechanical spectroscopy measurements were performed on decagonal quasicrystalline Al-Cu-Fe-Cr coatings of three different thicknesses deposited on a mild steel substrate. The mechanical loss spectra indicate that the internal friction is mostly caused by the quasicrystalline coating and that the contributions of both the steel substrate and the interface are small. The shear modulus measured in torsion increases with temperature, while the Young's modulus measured in flexion behaves normally. This shear mod

Simulations of nanocrystalline materials reveal that the pressure gradient present within the structure can play a key role in the movement of self-interstitial atoms (SIA's) to surrounding grain boundaries and therefore in the resulting defect structure formed during displacement cascades. Initially SIA's sense the grain boundary region as a "defect collector plate," a two-dimensional (2D) indistinguishable region under tension to which they are attracted. The SIA's approach the "defect collector plate" an

In order to eliminate internal and surface defects, which appear in the ingots during continuous casting of metallic alloys, homogeneous and fine structures are often required. Therefore, when the adjunction of inoculant substances is not possible, the electromagnetic stirring (EMS) process is used during solidification. It consists to create convective mouvements in the liquid part of the casting, by the action of an electromagnetic field. A fine equiaxed grain structure can then be observed. The main goal

Large-scale molecular dynamics of cascade production of the primary damage state are performed in nanocrystalline nickel with an average grain diameter of 12 nm and primary knock-on atom kinetic energies ranging from 5 to 30 keV. The role of the grain boundary during the cascade production of irradiated NC Ni is discussed in terms of grain-boundary structure. It is shown that regions of misfit in the grain boundaries can absorb self-interstitials and that stacking-fault tetrahedra are formed in the neighbou

Microstereolithography is a technology at the interface of the microengineering and rapid prototyping domains. It has evolved from the stereolithography technique, and is also based on a light-induced layer- stacking manufacturing, As the resolution of the microstereolithography technique is far better than the one of rapid prototyping technologies, this technique is of particular interest in the microengineering domain where its 3D capability allows the production of components no other microfabrication te

The results of structural and electrical characterizations of SrTiO3 thin films deposited onto MgO and LaAlO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition technique are presented. The influence of substrate and annealing procedure on the crystalline structure and dielectric properties of these ferroelectric thin films are investigated. The obtained experimental data are analyzed in terms of the Landau theory taking into account the room-temperature lattice mismatch of the ferroelectric and substrates as well as th

Backscattered electron (BSE) images of heat-cured concretes show alite grains surrounded by inner C-S-H gel of two distinct grey levels (referred to as two-tone inner C-S-H gel). The lighter rim forms at elevated temperature whereas the darker rim develops during subsequent exposure to moisture at 20 °C. This microstructural feature can potentially be used as an indicator to assess the curing history of a concrete. However, microstructural examinations of room-temperature concretes containing silica fume or

A process has been developed where multiple yarns of commingled glass and polypropylene are heated and placed to a desired geometry. The placed unidirectional (UD) tow is then encapsulated by over-moulding with glass mat thermoplastics (GMTs). The effects of both force (20 80 N), with an equivalent pressure range of 8 46 bar, and the displacement rate (20 100 mm/s) during tow placement on void content and flexural modulus were investigated for nine placement conditions. Placement rate affected the tow quali

The attachment of the first wall modules of the ITER FEAT fusion reactor is designed using flexible connectors made from titanium alloys. An assessment of the tensile and fatigue performance of two candidate alloys, a classical two phase Ti6Al4V alloy and a monophase alpha alloy Ti5Al2.5Sn, has been carried out using 590 MeV protons for the simulation of the fusion neutrons. The dose deposited was up to 0.3 dpa and the irradiation temperature was between 40 degreesC and 350 degreesC. The unirradiated tensil

Microcrystalline hydrogenated silicon films (muc-Si:H) have been deposited by a high current DC plasma in argon-silane-hydrogen mixtures at growth rates up to 10 nm/s and at substrate temperatures below 500 degreesC. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and FTIR analyses show that these films are highly crystallized. The surface morphology depends strongly on the experimental conditions and varies from a cauliflower structure to a prismatic one. The crystalline orientation of the films also chang
