Facial nerve injury and paralysis causes negative physical and psychosocial effects for afflicted patients. Impaired respiration, articulation, oral competence, as well as insufficient protection of the corneas may cause a markedly decreased quality of lif ...

Facial paralysis is a challenging condition, and current treatments rely on invasive transplant surgeries using a two-stage free muscle transfer procedure. The use of artificial muscles is a novel, less invasive approach, allowing faster recovery and more ...

In this paper, we analyze the integration of small antennas in a drone protected by a conductive structure. They must be light and resistant to provide high collision resilience, which is critical for drones flown indoors and in complex environments. To ac ...

The digitization of timber construction, the emergence of engineered wood products, and the urgent need to drastically reduce buildings' environmental impact have given a rebirth to wood as a construction material. On the one hand, increasing the use of ti ...

Ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs), a disinfection technology, efficiently inactivate pathogens in water. However, the assessment of UV-LED treatment and the mechanisms of UV inactivation on viruses (especially enveloped viruses) are limited. ...

This short paper proposes time-series x-ray tomography as a valuable tool for quantifying freezing processes in a remoulded clay. As an example, three simple closed system (i.e., no water entry) experiments are performed and analysed, all of which were fro ...

Electrocatalysis has been proposed as a versatile technology for wastewater treatment and reuse. While enormous attention has been centered on material synthesis and design, the practicality of such catalyst materials remains clouded by a lack of both stab ...

Understanding the real aging of Diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC) is key to predict their useful lifetime. This work comprises a detailed study of a commercial DOC in its unused state and after use in vehicle for 288,000 km. The activity of the samples was ...

In the literature, the task of dysarthric speech intelligibility assessment has been approached through development of different low-level feature representations, subspace modeling, phone confidence estimation or measurement of automatic speech recognitio ...

There is currently considerable interest in developing stiff, strong, tough, and heat resistant poly(lactide) (PLA) based materials with improved melt elasticity in response to the increasing demand for sustainable plastics. However, simultaneous optimizat ...

Local scouring is a leading cause of bridge collapses. To protect bridges against local scouring, different countermeasures have been proposed and tested in the literature. In this study, the performance of collars was evaluated for scour reduction at two ...

Detection of curvilinear structures in images has long been of interest. One of the most challenging aspects of this problem is inferring the graph representation of the curvilinear network. Most existing delineation approaches first perform binary segment ...

This article focuses on the problem of query by example spoken term detection (QbE-STD) in zero-resource scenario. State-of-the-art approaches primarily rely on dynamic time warping (DTW) based template matching techniques using phone posterior or bottlene ...

Fly ash-based geopolymers are being developed as sustainable alternate binders for producing concrete. The consistent production of a stable geopolymeric binder suitable for use in structural applications from alkaline activation of low-calcium fly ash was ...

Background: An increasing lifespan and the resulting change in our expectations of later life stages are dependent on a good health state. This emphasizes the importance of the development of strategies to further strengthen healthy aging. One important as ...

PurposeThere is increasing interest in using fate and exposure models to spatially differentiate the impacts of chemical emissions. This work aims at exploring the operationalization in life cycle assessment (LCA) of spatially differentiated models for tox ...

In-band full-duplex systems allow for more efficient use of temporal and spectral resources by transmitting and receiving information at the same time and on the same frequency. However, this creates a strong self-interference signal at the receiver, makin ...

For assessing the particulate fouling of water, the modified fouling index (MFI0.45) is a superior test to the silt density index (SDI). There is a need to compare both tests in terms of sensitivity, how they are affected by the filter material and the typ ...

Near eutectic Al-Cu droplets were rapidly solidified by Impulse Atomization. A wide range of microstructural scales was obtained at different cooling rates and undercoolings. The micrographs of the investigated samples revealed two distinct zones of differ ...

Solar disinfection (SODIS) is a WHO-accepted intervention method for improving water sources in developing countries. Despite its effectiveness, the limitations of long exposure and bacterial regrowth risk demand further improvement of the practice. In thi ...
