Newly diagnosed prostate cancers differ dramatically in mutational composition and lethality. The most accurate clinical predictor of lethality is tumor tissue architecture, quantified as tumor grade. To interrogate the evolutionary origins of prostate can ...

Retinoblastoma, while relatively rare, stands as the most prevalent intraocular cancer. In Switzerland, the survival rate approaches 100%, but it drops to less than 50% in low-income countries. The current treatment options for retinoblastoma rely on a lim ...

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most frequent and highly malignant form of brain cancer. New therapeutic regimens are urgently needed as GBM patients present with a minimal response to currently-approved therapies. The goal of this project is to identify new the ...

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death globally. Immunotherapy represents one of the most promising cancer treatments inducing complete and durable responses in a fraction of cancer patients. Despite the unprecedented clinical success achieved by T c ...

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are amongst the most common bacterial infections and are the second-most frequent reason for antibiotic prescriptions. Moreover, in about 25% of all treated cases, recurrence of infection occurs. Uropathogenic Escherichia co ...

Purpose Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive malignant primary brain tumor. The unfavorable prognosis despite maximal therapy relates to high propensity for recurrence. Thus, overall survival (OS) is quite limited and local failure remains the fundame ...

Cancer represents one of the major public health challenges worldwide, representing more than 25% of all deaths in the European Union in 2014. It affects a large and growing part of the general population, with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) estimatin ...

The immune checkpoint blockade-based immunotherapies are revolutionizing cancer management. Tumor-associated neutrophils (TANs) were recently highlighted to have a pivotal role in modulating the tumor microenvironment and the antitumor immune response. How ...

Macrophages sustain tumour progression by facilitating angiogenesis, promoting immunosuppression, and enhancing cancer cell invasion and metastasis. They also modulate tumour response to anti-cancer therapy in pre-clinical models. This knowledge has motiva ...

Delayed fluorescence (DF) is a long-lived luminescence process used in a variety of applications ranging from oxygen sensing in biological tissues to organic Light Emitting Diodes. In common cases, DF results from the deexcitation of the first excited trip ...

Significance: Side effects of many cancer treatments are associated with the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in normal tissues. This explains why patients treated by photodynamic therapy (PDT) often suffer from skin photosensitization, whereas ...

Acting as an extracellular matrix protein receptor, alpha(v)beta(3) integrin becomes an appealing target for photodynamic therapy of bladder cancer. Here, specific alpha(v)beta(3)-integrin-targeting porphyrinato-gadolinium complexes (Gd-PEG-R-n) are demons ...

Ureteral stents are small flexible tubes which are clinically used to restore the urine drainage in presence of obstructions of the ureteral lumen such as tumours, kidney/ureteral stones. The lifetime risk of developing urinary stones is about 20% in men a ...

In patients suffering from underactive bladder (UAB), the contraction of the detrusor muscle has insufficient strength or duration to ensure efficient bladder emptying. Although catheterisation is currently the most effective method to empty the bladder, i ...

Nowadays, cancer is one of the leading causes of death in developed countries. The actual medical tools to detect cancer at early stage suffer to their low sensitivity. The design of multimodal nanodevices for in vivo imaging offers the perspective of canc ...

Immunotherapy can harness the power of host's immune system to fight cancer. In the last few decades, tremendous progress has been made in this field, with remarkable clinical successes achieved consisting of a durable response in a fraction of patients. H ...

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-associated deaths worldwide. Platinum-based chemotherapy is the most common therapeutic approach in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), particularly for tumors that carry non-druggable activating mutation ...

The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in normal tissues is associated with side effects of many cancer treatments. This is, in particular, the case for the skin photosensitization experienced by certain patients subjected to PDT based on a system ...

Tumor-infiltrating myeloid cells promote tumor progression by mediating angiogenesis, tumor cell intravasation and metastasis, which can offset the effects of chemotherapy, radiation, and anti-angiogenic therapy. Here, we show that the kinase switch contro ...

Bone marrow-derived myeloid cells can accumulate within tumors and foster cancer outgrowth. Local immune-neoplastic interactions have been intensively investigated, but the contribution of the systemic host environment to tumor growth remains poorly unders ...
