Insulin resistance is a major predictor of the development of metabolic disorders. Sirtuins (SIRTs) have emerged as potential targets that can be manipulated to counteract age-related diseases, including type 2 diabetes. SIRT2 has been recently shown to ex ...

Current methods for few-shot fine-tuning of pretrained masked language models (PLMs) require carefully engineered prompts and verbalizers for each new task to convert examples into a cloze-format that the PLM can score. In this work, we propose PERFECT, a ...

Complex events are instrumental in understanding advanced behaviours and properties of a system. They can represent more meaningful events as compared to simple events. In this thesis we propose to use wearable sensor signals to detect complex events. Thes ...

Pancreatic beta cells play a major role in the regulation of glucose homeostasis by secreting insulin in response to elevated blood glucose levels. A gradual deterioration of functional beta cell mass and the chronic elevation of blood glucose levels are c ...

Background: Multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) enhance viability and function of islets of Langerhans. We aimed to examine the interactions between human MSC and human islets of Langerhans that influence the function of islets. Methods: Human MSC ...

Caloric restriction (CR) has been shown to prevent the onset of insulin resistance and to delay age-related physiological decline in mammalian organisms. SIRT1, a NAD(+) -dependent deacetylase enzyme, has been suggested to mediate the adaptive responses to ...

Glutathione (GSH) deficits have been observed in several mental or degenerative illness, and so has the metabolic syndrome. The impact of a decreased glucose metabolism on the GSH system is well-known, but the effect of decreased GSH levels on the energy m ...

In diabetes, pancreatic beta-cells play a key role. These cells are clustered within structures called islets of Langerhans inside the pancreas and produce insulin, which is directly secreted into the blood stream. The dense vascularization of islets of La ...

From epidemiological studies it is known that diabetes patients display increased risk of developing dementia. Moreover, cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are also accompanied by impaired glucose homeostasis and insulin signalling. Although ...

This paper investigates the structural response of laminated glass beams under combined fire-exposure and sustained in-plane loading. This is done by means of experimental testing and Finite Element (FE) numerical modelling. Firstly, small-scale (1 m long) ...

We demonstrate the cavity quantum electrodynamics towards strong- coupling regime mediated by cavity loss and exciton pure dephasing in singular site-controlled quantum dotnanocavity system, studied by micro-photoluminescence (mu-PL) and time- resolved PL ...

In diabetes, pancreatic beta-cells play a key role. These cells are organized within structures called islets of Langerhans inside the pancreas and produce insulin. Insulin is one of the main hormones contributing to glucose homeostasis, which is the hallm ...

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) is among the most revolutionary technologies of 21st century, with the applications ranging from industrial systems to consumer electronics. Using MEMS in battery-powered wireless devices has long been seen as the evol ...

Background and aims: Metabolic disruptions characterized by high hepatic lipid content (HLC) are associated with impairments in whole body glucose homeostasis. To gain insight on the role of hepatic lipids in the metabolic performance in the absence artifi ...

New advancements in the management of type I diabetic patients (T1DM) call for a new generation of monitoring systems based upon an array of metabolic biosensors including sensors for insulin detection. Blood insulin values are always less than 270 pM; the ...

The vacuum discharge along the dielectric surface, also called surface flashover, brings significant damages to the vacuum-solid insulation system. Here we implement shape-flexible, complex surface groove microstructures on the dielectric to mitigate the i ...

In the context of a cellular therapy for diabetes, methods for pancreatic progenitor expansion and subsequent differentiation into insulin-producing beta cells would be extremely valuable. Here we establish three-dimensional culture conditions in Matrigel ...

Objective. When humans perceive an erroneous action, an EEG error-related potential (ErrP) is elicited as a neural response. ErrPs have been largely investigated in discrete feedback protocols, where actions are executed at discrete steps, to enable seamle ...

Planar cell polarity (PCP) refers to the collective orientation of cells within the epithelial plane. We show that progenitor cells forming the ducts of the embryonic pancreas express PCP proteins and exhibit an active PCP pathway. Planar polarity proteins ...
