We propose Reconfigurable Umbrella Meshes (RUMs), a new class of preassembled deployable structures. A RUM has a compact rest state that can be easily altered to deploy into different bending-active 3D target shapes. RUMs consist of elastic beams and rigid ...

Our dataset consists of very high-resolution aerial images (50cm) and a digital elevation model (50cm) that covers approx. 2300 km2 of land above 2000m altitude in the southwestern part of Switzerland. Our land cover labels focus on alpine land cover that ...

Unrefinement is a tool that allows to perform faster numerical simulations by controlling the level of precision in the specified area. We introduce an algorithm that creates a coarser geometry from an initial regular geometry, which is represented with re ...

Urban planners are increasingly interested in understanding what makes a neighbourhood pleasant and liveable. In this paper, we use the overhead perspective as a new way to describe and understand liveability of city neighborhoods. We predict building qual ...

We propose a novel approach to reconstructing curvilinear tree structures evolving over time, such as road networks in 2D aerial images or neural structures in 3D microscopy stacks acquired in vivo. To enforce temporal consistency, we simultaneously proces ...

t is well known that accurate aerial position and attitude control is beneficial for image orientation in airborne photogrammetry. The aerial control is traditionally obtained by Kalman filtering/smoothing inertial and GNSS observations prior to the bundle ...

This article discusses the problem of time registration between navigation and imaging components on Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs). Accurate mapping with MAVs is gaining importance in applications such as corridor mapping, road and pipeline inspections or m ...

This study deals with semantic segmentation of high-resolution (aerial) images where a semantic class label is assigned to each pixel via supervised classification as a basis for automatic map generation. Recently, deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) ...

We propose a new design for an optical coded target based on concentric circles and a position and orientation determination algorithm optimized for high distances compared to the target size. If two ellipses are fitted on the edge pixels corresponding to ...

Aerial imagery captured via unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is playing an increasingly important role in disaster response. Unlike satellite imagery, aerial imagery can be captured and processed within hours rather than days. In addition, the spatial resol ...

In proximity lithography, interference and diffraction effects arise when printing small features because of the proximity gap. Different techniques are used in order to control and take advantage of theses effects. In this paper, the focus is set on the M ...

Finding the centerline and estimating the radius of linear structures is a critical first step in many applications, ranging from road delineation in 2D aerial images to modeling blood vessels, lung bronchi, and dendritic arbors in 3D biomedical image stac ...

This study highlights the benefits of precise aerial position and attitude control in the context of mapping with Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs). Accurate mapping with MAVs is gaining importance in applications such as corridor mapping, road and pipeline ins ...

Microphone arrays are central players in hands-free speech interface applications. The main duty of a microphone array is capturing distant-talking speech with high quality. A microphone array can acquire the desired speech signals selectively by leading t ...

This study examines the effects of land-use policies and natural events on the evolution of two wooded pastures in the Jura Mountains in Switzerland between 1934 and 2000. The socioeconomic context and the local conditions were seen as major driving forces ...

The great Swiss mathematician Ludwig Schläfli (1814-1895) left after his death more than three hundred and fifty notebooks. They include mathematical studies and new results, as well as works about classical mathematical texts and a priori more surprising ...

Forest ecosystems show diverse and evolving structures. Accurate descriptions and a good knowledge of these environments are therefore a real challenge. Existing forest cover investigation methods are mostly laborious, hard to replicate and usually based o ...

Orthographic images compose an efficient and economic way to represent aerial images. This kind of information allows to measure two-dimensional objects and relate these to Geographic Information Systems. This paper deals with the computation of a true ort ...

This paper presents a semi-automatic and systematic computational approach intending to count and localize different species of trees in zones of dense forest. Comparative analysis of the application of multi-spectral high resolution images and aerial LIDA ...
