We present Sudokube, a novel system that supports interactive speed querying on high-dimensional data using partially materialized data cubes. Given a storage budget, it judiciously chooses what projections to precompute and materialize during cube constru ...

Information retrieval (IR) systems such as search engines are important for people to find what they need among the tremendous amount of data available in their organization or on the Internet. These IR systems enable users to search in a large data collec ...

Image-based retrieval in large Earth observation archives is difficult, because one needs to navigate across thousands of candidate matches only with the proposition image as a guide. By using text as a query language, the retrieval system gains in usabili ...

The heterogeneity of today's Web sources requires information retrieval (IR) systems to handle multi-modal queries. Such queries define a user's information needs by different data modalities, such as keywords, hashtags, user profiles, and other media. Rec ...

Internet ranking algorithms play a crucial role in information technologies and numerical analysis due to their efficiency in high dimensions and wide range of possible applications, including scientometrics and systemic risk in finance (SinkRank, DebtRank ...

The growing demand for data-intensive decision support and the migration to multi-tenant infrastructures put databases under the stress of high analytical query load. The requirement for high throughput contradicts the traditional design of query-at-a-time ...

Effective information retrieval (IR) relies on the ability to comprehensively capture a user's information needs. Traditional IR systems are limited to homogeneous queries that define the information to retrieve by a single modality. Support for heterogene ...

Modern applications accumulate data at an exponentially increasing rate and traditional database systems struggle to keep up. Decision support systems used in industry, rely heavily on data analysis, and require real-time responses irrespective of data siz ...

We present new techniques to analyze natural local search algorithms for several variants of the max-sum diversification problem which, in its most basic form, is as follows: given an n-point set X subset of R-d and an integer k, select k points in X so th ...

Multimedia databases are growing rapidly in size in the digital age. To increase the value of these data and to enhance the user experience, there is a need to make these videos searchable through automatic indexing. Because people appearing and talking in ...

We consider a data owner that outsources its dataset to an untrusted server. The owner wishes to enable the server to answer range queries on a single attribute, without compromising the privacy of the data and the queries. There are several schemes on “pr ...

In previous articles (di Lenardo et al, 2016; Seguin et al, 2016), we explored how efficient visual search engines operating not on the basis of textual metadata but directly through visual queries, could fundamen- tally change the navigation in large data ...

Content-based image retrieval aims at substituting traditional indexing based on manual annotation by using automatically-extracted visual indexing features. Novel techniques are needed however to efficiently deal with the semantic gap (i.e. the partial ma ...

Modern industrial, government, and academic organizations are collecting massive amounts of data at an unprecedented scale and pace. The ability to perform timely, predictable and cost-effective analytical processing of such large data sets in order to ext ...

The advent of the Web reshaped the way in which humans memorize information, arguably unlike any other technological advance of the last decades. Rather than remembering the information itself, people are primed to find the needed information through Web s ...

Background: Wikipedia, the world's largest and most popular encyclopedia is an indispensable source of chemistry information. It contains among others also entries for over 15,000 chemicals including metabolites, drugs, agrochemicals and industrial chemica ...

Query plans offer diverse tradeoffs between conflicting cost metrics such as execution time, energy consumption, or execution fees in a multi-objective scenario. It is convenient for users to choose the desired cost tradeoff in an interactive process, dyna ...

This paper presents 5ex+y, a system that is able to extract, index and query mathematical content expressed as mathematical expressions, complementing the CERN Document Server (CDS). We present the most important aspects of its design, our approach to mode ...

Many analytics applications generate mixed workloads, i.e., workloads comprised of analytical tasks with different processing characteristics including data pre-processing, SQL, and iterative machine learning algorithms. Examples of such mixed workloads ca ...
