We study the flow stability and spatiotemporal spectral dynamics of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) suspensions in a custom Taylor-Couette flow cell using the intrinsic shear induced birefringence and liquid crystalline properties of CNC suspensions for flow v ...

In this thesis we address various factors that contribute both theoretically and practically to mitigating supply demand mismatches. The thesis is composed of three chapters, where each chapter is an independent scientific paper. In the first paper, we dev ...

Local modifications of a computational domain are often performed in order to simplify the meshing process and to reduce computational costs and memory requirements. However, removing geometrical features of a domain often introduces a non-negligible error ...

Data-intensive systems are the backbone of today's computing and are responsible for shaping data centers. Over the years, cloud providers have relied on three principles to maintain cost-effective data systems: use disaggregation to decouple scaling, use ...

Multi-Scale computing systems aim at bringing the computing as close as possible to the data sources, to optimize both computation and networking. These systems are composed of at least three computing layers: the terminal layer, the edge layer, and the cl ...

Cavitation is a topic that has long been of interest due to the large and growing range of applications associated with it. This is mainly because the collapse of cavitation bubbles releases a considerable amount of energy into the surrounding environment. ...

To benefit from the cloud’s higher elasticity and price-efficiency, most modern data-lake engines support S3-like cloud object storage (COS) services as their optional or preferred underlying storage. Meanwhile, the widespread column stores, such as Parque ...

The purpose of this paper is to assess the influence of soil-structure interaction and site effects on the seismic behavior of steel moment-resisting frames, with a view to describing the underlying “physics” behind the damage mechanisms triggered. We exam ...

To advance the field of piezoelectrics, it is desirable to find materials that combine high piezoelectricity with high elasticity. Applications such as self-sensors, stretchable electronics, soft robots, and energy harvesting would benefit tremendously. Ho ...

We propose centralized brain observatories for large-scale recordings of neural activity in mice and non-human primates coupled with cloud-based data analysis and sharing. Such observatories will advance reproducible systems neuroscience and democratize ac ...

The Internodes method is a general purpose method to deal with non-conforming discretizations of partial differential equations on 2D and 3D regions partitioned into disjoint subdomains. In this paper we are interested in measuring how much the Internodes ...

Jet injection devices have been studied and developed for transdermal drug delivery to avoid the use of needles. Such contact-less devices provide several advantages such as better dose control, lateral and depth localisation, lower collateral damage than ...

Twinning in fcc High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) has been implicated as a possible mechanism for hardening that enables enhanced ductility. Here, a theory for the twinning stress is developed analogous to recent theories for yield stress. Specifically, the stres ...

The Circular Economy (CE) concept has recently gained momentum as a perspective to tackle global challenges such as resource scarcity and waste management. Multiple types of interventions have been proposed to support the transition towards a CE. This pape ...

Pedestrians, like drivers, generally dislike congestion. This is true for most pedestrian environments: trains stations, airports, or shopping malls. Furthermore, pedestrian congestion also influences the attractiveness of public transportation networks. T ...

A traditional machine learning pipeline involves collecting massive amounts of data centrally on a server and training models to fit the data. However, increasing concerns about the privacy and security of user's data, combined with the sheer growth in the ...

Land is the support of life and the generator of energy cycles in the planet, also being a finite resource. The first consequence of urban population growth and build environment expansion is land consumption. Present strategies reduce this expenditure, ge ...

Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) deployments are migrating from on-premise to cloud settings in order to exploit the elasticity of cloud infrastructure which allows them to adapt to workload variations. However, cloud adaptation comes at the cost of re ...
