Reinforced concrete flat slabs consist of a continuous, thin concrete plate that rests on a grid of columns. The supporting surface of the columns is very small compared to the floor plan dimensions, leading to concentrations of shear forces near the colum ...

Lightweight modules are essential for next-generation vehicle-integrated photovoltaic (VIPV) applications, such as solar-powered cars, allowing integration of solar cells beyond the roof, and on the hood, boot and body panels, and thereby extending the dri ...

Bending-active elastica beam is a structural configuration that is based on the elastic deformation of an initially straight beam. This deformation occurs when horizontal displacements are applied to a sliding support, causing the beam to bend into an arch ...

The effect of fiber architecture, i.e., unidirectional (UD) vs. multi-directional (MD), on the tension-tension fa-tigue behavior of bolted double-lap basalt composite joints was experimentally investigated. The fatigue load-life (F -N) curves of MD and UD ...

This research explores the capability of PEI and PVDF thermoplastic interlayers to arrest cracks in epoxy materials modified with short-glass fibers and core-shell rubber particles. It also investigates the effect of interlayer position, the number of inte ...

Every engineering calculation is an approximation of reality, with inevitable uncertainties involved. This fact implies that a reliability verification accounting for the uncertainties is a necessary step in the design and assessment of structures. Nowaday ...

Fatigue life prediction of wind turbine rotor blades is a very challenging task, as their failure is led by different failure types that act synergistically. Inherent defects like wrinkles, fiber misalignments, and voids that can be introduced during fabri ...

In the evolution of structural glass beam elements, the requirements for post-fracture load bearing capacity and safe failure behaviour have led to the development of reinforced and post-tensioned beams. Maximum bending capacity in the post-fracture state ...

The landscape of computing is changing, thanks to the advent of modern networking equipment that allows machines to exchange information in as little as one microsecond. Such advancement has enabled microsecond-scale distributed computing, where entire dis ...

The increasing usage of nonlinear analyses for the design of reinforced concrete structures and the necessity of codes of practice to provide a consistent safety format for them is one of the challenges that new generations of codes of practice are facing. ...

Gas path fault diagnosis of a gas turbine is a complex task involving field data analysis and knowledge-based reasoning. In this paper, a data-knowledge hybrid driven method for gas path fault diagnosis is proposed by integrating a physical model-based gas ...

In the framework of the XFLEX HYDRO H2020 European Project, a 5 MW reversible Francis pump-turbine prototype, equipped with an industrial full size frequency converter, is investigated to demonstrate enhanced grid regulation capacities of variable speed hy ...

Our transportation field has recently witnessed an arms race of neural network-based trajectory predictors. While these predictors are at the core of many applications such as autonomous navigation or pedestrian flow simulations, their adversarial robustne ...

Anchorage of shear reinforcement, such as links or stirrups, can be performed by providing hooks, bends or heads at their ends, by welding transverse reinforcement or by closing open stirrups with pins. Hooks and bends, also used to enhance the anchorage o ...

The development and construction of offshore wind farms requires the correct estimation of the friction that can be mobilised at the rock/grout interface. In conventional studies, the shear behaviour of a joint is usually investigated with laboratory tests ...

Seismic assessments of historical masonry buildings are affected by several sources of epistemic uncertainty. These are mainly the material and the modelling parameters and the displacement capacity of the elements. Additional sources of uncertainty lie in ...

The phenomena associated with the consolidation of fresh concrete (bleeding and plastic settlement) are commonly considered significant for the bond performance of reinforcement. However, rules to take care of such influence for design are not consistent a ...

A folding fabrication method inspired by origami for carbon fiber-reinforced composites to fabricate three-dimensional structures is presented. PMI foams serve as substrates, making it possible to manufacture this kind of origami-inspired composite sandwic ...

The effectiveness of post-tensioning in enhancing the fracture resistance of glass beams depends on the level of compressive pre-stress introduced at the glass edge surface that will in service be exposed to tensile stresses induced by bending. Maximum pre ...

The objective of this thesis is to develop knowledge and methods to prevent fatigue failure of bridges. The Fatigue Limit State is investigated from both the demand (S) and resistance (R) side. The S-part focuses on reduction of uncertainties through monit ...
