A reversible photo-electrochemical device operating under concentrated irradiation could offer a stand-alone solution for producing solar fuel (in photo-driven electrolysis mode) and power (in fuel cell mode). This strategy would present the advantage of h ...

Abstract The degradation of metal interconnects (ICs) in Solid Oxide Cells (SOCs) primarily results from chromium (Cr) oxide scale growth on stainless-steel substrates, causing ohmic loss and air-side electrode poisoning by Cr. This thesis addresses these ...

The value of operando and in situ characterization methodologies for understanding electrochemical systems under operation can be inferred from the upsurge of studies that have reported mechanistic insights into electrocatalytic processes based on such mea ...

Degradation of cementitious materials by sulfate ions is commonly classified into chemical and physical sulfate attack. So-called "physical" attack dominates in many field situations, but laboratory testing focuses on "chemical" attack under full-immersion ...

Non-noble metal catalysts (NNMCs) hold the potential to replace the expensive Pt-based materials currently used to speed up the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) cathodes, but they feature poor durability that in ...

Fast and uniform ion transport within the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is considered a crucial factor for ensuring the long-term stability of metal electrodes. In this study, we present the fabrication of ultrathin artificial interphases consisting o ...

Although the effects of impurities on the Ni-YSZ electrode of a solid oxide cell in fuel cell operation have been studied, reports on their effects during electrolysis operation are limited. Here, short-term experiments at various current densities and a d ...

The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is envisioned to play a significant role in achieving carbon neutrality while contributing to storing renewable energies. Cu-based materials are among the most promising electrocatalysts. However, 16 diffe ...

The electroreduction of CO2 (CO2RR) is a promising strategy toward sustainable fuels. Cu is the only Earth-abundant and pure metal capable of catalyzing CO2-to-hydrocarbons conversion with significant Faradaic efficiencies; yet, its dynamic structure under ...

The deployment of renewable energy systems has been increasing steadily in recent years. The intermittency associated with the renewable electricity supply can be addressed through the usage of energy storage and release systems. In this framework, reversi ...

Improving the throughput of electrochemical reactions such as water electrolysis is an ongoing effort. In a membrane-less electrolyzer, product separation can be achieved via controlled two-phase flows within the electrochemical flow cells. In this case, i ...

Despite being a mature technology, solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) devices are still limited by lifetime issues. In SOFC stacks, cell/interconnect interaction is the main responsible for voltage degradation at the oxygen electrode side. Corrosion and chromium ...

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are approaching commercialization to improve power production efficiency. Currently, cost and lifetime reliability limit their spread in the market. The SOFC is ceramic-based, but refractory metal alloys are in fact the major ...

The perovskite-type mixed oxide La0.3Sr0.55Ti0.95Ni0.05O3-delta (LSTN) is demonstrated to exhibit the remarkable property of structural regeneration, where Ni can be reversibly exsoluted from the host perovskite lattice resulting in a regenerable Ni cataly ...

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) can convert hydrocarbon fuels, such as methane, into heat and electricity with a high conversion efficiency. The fuel flexibility of the SOFC derives from the high operating temperature (600-900 °C). Such a high temperature s ...

Optimization of industrial processes aims at minimizing operating cost or maximizing economic profit while respecting plant constraints. In process industry, real-time optimization (RTO) is often considered to ensure optimal plant operation and constraint ...

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) are highly efficient electrochemical conversion devices for the production of electricity that combine fuel flexibility with low emissions of pollutants. The reverse operation in electrolysis mode (SOEC) allows storing electri ...

Natural polymers such as those present in foods contain abundant noncovalent intra- and intermolecular interactions, notably hydrogen bonds, which make them rigid when dry, but on exposure to water soften, due to disruption of these interactions. This soft ...

To provide new insights toward the selection of the most suitable AOP for isoxazolyl penicillins elimination, the degradation of dicloxacillin, a isoxazolyl penicillin model, was studied using different advanced oxidation processes (AOPs): ultrasound (US), ...

Magnesium exhibits a high potential for a variety of applications in areas such as transport, energy and medicine. However, untreated magnesium alloys are prone to corrosion, restricting their practical application. Therefore, it is necessary to develop ne ...
