Performance evolution of Nb3Sn cable-in-conduit conductors under cyclic load

Résumé

Two subsize, Nb3Sn cable-in-conduit conductors, are tested as short samples in the SULTAN test facility. Transverse load is applied by sweeping up and down the operating current in high background field. A serious performance loss of I, and n-factor is observed upon cyclic load, with a drop of the critical current, I-c, larger than 30%. The results are critically discussed and compared to similar findings from the literature. The impact of the cyclic load on the Nb3Sn CICC performance must be carefully evaluated in the magnet design.

Aimant

Un aimant permanent, ou simplement aimant dans le langage courant, est un objet fabriqué dans un matériau magnétique dur, c’est-à-dire dont l'aimantation rémanente et le champ coercitif sont grands (voir ci-dessous). Cela lui donne des propriétés particulières liées à l'existence du champ magnétique, comme celle d'exercer une force d'attraction sur tout matériau ferromagnétique. Le mot aimant est, comme le mot diamant, dérivé du grec ancien ἀδάμας, adámas (« fer particulièrement dur ou diamant »), apparenté à l'adjectif ἀδάμαστος, adámastos, (« indomptable »), en raison de la dureté de la pierre d'aimant.

Superconducting magnet

A superconducting magnet is an electromagnet made from coils of superconducting wire. They must be cooled to cryogenic temperatures during operation. In its superconducting state the wire has no electrical resistance and therefore can conduct much larger electric currents than ordinary wire, creating intense magnetic fields. Superconducting magnets can produce stronger magnetic fields than all but the strongest non-superconducting electromagnets, and large superconducting magnets can be cheaper to operate because no energy is dissipated as heat in the windings.

Simple random sample

In statistics, a simple random sample (or SRS) is a subset of individuals (a sample) chosen from a larger set (a population) in which a subset of individuals are chosen randomly, all with the same probability. It is a process of selecting a sample in a random way. In SRS, each subset of k individuals has the same probability of being chosen for the sample as any other subset of k individuals. A simple random sample is an unbiased sampling technique. Simple random sampling is a basic type of sampling and can be a component of other more complex sampling methods.
