In light of the challenges posed by climate change and the goals of the Paris Agreement, electricity generation is shifting to a more renewable and decentralized pattern, while the operation of systems like buildings is increasingly electrified. This calls ...

The thesis explores the issue of fairness in the real-time (RT) control of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) hosted in active distribution networks (ADNs) in the presence of uncertainties by proposing and experimentally validating appropriate control ...

The energy transition towards a carbon-neutral and sustainable economy is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century to combat global warming and pollution. The decarbonization process is affecting every sector of the economy (electricity, transpor ...

Energy balance in a power system must be maintained at all times, regardless of the variations in generation and consumption. Large Pumped Hydro Storage Plants (PHSPs) are introduced to the power system to accumulate the excess of energy during the low dem ...

Relying on the power flexibility of distributed energy resources (DERs) located in an active distribution network (ADN), this ADN will be able to provide power flexibility to the upper-layer grid at their point of common coupling (PCC). The power flexibili ...

The increasing penetration of variable renewable energies poses new challenges for grid management. The economic feasibility of grid-balancing plants may be limited by low annual operating hours if they work either only for power generation or only for pow ...

Today's electrical grid is undergoing deep changes, resulting from the large integration of distributed Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in an effort to decarbonize the generation of electrical energy. In addition to the emergence of this volatile electricit ...

The time-reversal invariance is readily described and universally embodied in most laws of nature, either in a strict or in a soft sense. Based on this underlying physical principle, time-reversal theory has been theoretically and experimentally studied in ...

Based on the analysis of the reference case, models developed at the PVLAB-EPFL and IPESEEPFL have been valued and improved to assess the impact of distributed generation and ancillary services on REel demonstrator. The models are used to evaluate solution ...

Standard and newly designed building blocks for complex urban sites-also designated by urban archetypes - are used in this study to quantify the influence of urban forms on their energy demand and energy systems design. An energy hub, which consists on a m ...

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) have developed to a mature technology, able to achieve electrical efficiencies beyond 60%. This makes them particularly suitable for off-grid applications, where SOFCs can supply both electricity and heat at high efficiency. C ...

This thesis develops optimization-based techniques for the control of distributed energy resources to provide multiple services to the power network. It is divided into three parts. The first part of this thesis focuses on the development of a framework f ...

Renewables challenge the management of energy supply and demand due to their intermittency. A promising solution is the direct conversion of the excess electrical energy into valuable chemicals in electrochemical reactors that are inexpensive, scalable, an ...

A simulation tool (EcoSim) has been developed to analyse the economic and environmental aspects of the integration of several energy conversion units. For a given investment over 25 years, the tool calculates the self-consumption rate, the autonomy level, ...

Extreme climate events occur more frequently and stronger in the future due to climate change. Maintaining the energy security during extreme conditions is essential to reduce the impacts of extreme climate and avoid disasters. Resilient design of the ener ...

This paper presents a novel frequency-domain approach toward the control design for parallel grid-connected voltage source inverters (VSIs) with LCL output filters. The proposed method allows the controllers of multiple VSIs to be designed in a single step ...

The capacity of electrical distribution systems of hosting photo-voltaic (PV) generation is limited due to the requirements of distribution system operators (DSOs) to respect statutory voltage levels along feeders and not exceed line current limits. Tradit ...

Uncertainty levels in forecasting of renewable generation and demand are known to affect the amount of reserve required to operate the power grid with a given level of reliability. In this paper, we quantify the effects on the system reserve and reliabilit ...

Global solar PV capacity continues growing and this technology is a central solution for the global energy transition based on both economic growth and decarbonisation. PV technology is mainly being installed in distribution networks next to the consumptio ...
