Spinal cord injuries (SCI) often lead to upper limb impairment, necessitating innovative solutions for daily assistance beyond traditional rigid robotics due to their impractical weight and size. Despite still preliminary, soft wearables are arising as a p ...

The adaptive structure and excellent actuation of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) make them promising candidates for soft robotics, haptic interfaces and artificial muscles. A wide variety of elastomers have been synthesised and investigated as diele ...

Time-domain solutions of Maxwell’s equations in homogeneous and isotropic media are paramount to studying transient or broadband phenomena. However, analytical solutions are generally unavailable for practical applications, while numerical solutions are co ...

The shift towards DC power distribution networks, enabled by power electronics technologies, is changing the nature of electrical power systems. Nowadays, DC power distribution networks can effectively support the high penetration of distributed energy res ...

In recent years, soft robotics has surged in applications like wearables, drones, smart fabrics, and medical instruments. Due to their compliance, these devices excel in tasks demanding dexterity and adaptability, such as manipulation, locomotion, crash re ...

This paper focuses on the operational characteristics of a medium voltage resonant DC transformer based on a split capacitor IGCT 3L-NPC leg. The study delves into both the dynamic and static balancing aspects of the 3L-NPC when operating in a two-level, 5 ...

Inductive circuits and devices are ubiquitous and important design elements in many applications, such as magnetic drives, galvanometers, magnetic scanners, applying direct current (DC) magnetic fields to systems, radio frequency coils in nuclear magnetic ...

Nowadays, direct current (DC) technology is increasing its presence in alternating current (AC) power systems. This trend is enabled by the progress in energy conversion through semiconductor devices and power electronics. Therefore, it is possible to imag ...

The ITER Heating Neutral Beam (HNB) source prototype SPIDER (Source for the Production of Ions of Deuterium Extracted from a Radio frequency plasma), hosted at the Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF) in Padova, Italy, has recently started operating with evap ...

This paper presents an output capacitor-less low-dropout regulator (LDO) with a bias switching scheme for biomedical applications with dual-range load currents. Power optimization is crucial for systems with multiple activation modes such as neural interfa ...

Despite their high sensitivity and their suitability for miniaturization, biosensors are still limited for clinical applications due to the lack of reproducibility and specificity of their detection performance. The design and preparation of sensing surfac ...

Paschen failures in ITER, W7-X and JT60 superconducting coils at the acceptance tests have shown that it is highly desirable to lower the coil discharge voltage (U-d) of the DEMO Toroidal Field (TF) coils. Another benefit of lowering the U-d might be the r ...

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the mechanical and thermal behaviour of HTS coated conductor cables for EUROfusion DEMO magnets. One of the issue in large HTS magnets is the safety against a quench. A quench is a sudden thermal runway in which the ...

Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is considered an important approach for understanding multidomain fields and is widely used in complex systems such as aerospace. In this article, a detailed survey of MBSE literature was conducted from its commenceme ...

Lightning strikes can seriously affect the reliability and availability of electrical infrastructures. The computation of lightning-electromagnetic fields represents one of the most crucial steps in the evaluation of the induced effects; thus, having at di ...

In this work, the emergence of polarization and electro-mechanical coupling in Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 and Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 â PbTiO3 was investigated by means of thermally stimulated current, and nonlinear dielectric and electro-mechanical measurements. The pre ...

Aluminium is a metal sought in the industry because of its various physical properties. It is produced by an electrolysis reduction process in large cells. In these cells, a large electric current goes through the electrolytic bath and the liquid aluminium ...

Electro-adhesive clutches have become effective tools for variable stiffness functions in many robotic systems due to their light weight, high speed and strong brake force. In this paper, we present a novel, tubular design of an electro-adhesive clutch. Ou ...

A good knowledge of material properties is a critical aspect for modeling high-temperature superconductor (HTS) devices. However, the electrical resistivity of coated conductors above the critical current is limited. The major challenge in characterizing t ...

The measurement and generation of mechanical deformations is a key functionality in health monitoring, human-machine interaction, and soft robotics. However, current methods typically rely on small and hard transducers, which result in poor performance, cu ...
