The flow in a Francis turbine at full load is characterised by the development of an axial vortex rope in the draft tube. The vortex rope often promotes cavitation if the turbine is operated at a sufficiently low Thoma number. Furthermore, the vortex rope ...

The thermodynamics of an electrically charged, multicomponent continuous medium with intrinsic rotation is analysed in the presence of electromagnetic fields with a weak linear magnetoelectric coupling in the non-relativistic limit. Taking into account the ...

Microbial Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) is an innovative technique for soil grouting involving a bacterial reactive grout. A comprehensive research work is carried out to better understand and consequently describe the phenomenon of multispecies rea ...

This paper is concerned with the initial-boundary value problems of scalar transport equations with uncertain transport velocities. It was demonstrated in our earlier works that regularity of the exact solutions in the random spaces (or the parametric spac ...

The thermodynamics of an electrically charged, multicomponent continuous medium with electromagnetic fields is analysed in the non-relativistic limit. Applying locally the first and second law of thermodynamics and Maxwell’s equations for a linear theory o ...

This paper describes a new numerical method for the simulation of phase change phenomena between a liquid and a vapour in the presence of non-condensable gases. The method is based on an interface-tracking approach in the framework of single-fluid modellin ...

Many details about the flow of water in soils in a hillslope are unknowable given current technologies. One way of learning about the bulk effects of water velocity distributions on hillslopes is through the use of tracers. However, this paper will demonst ...

Heat conduction in dielectric crystals originates from the dynamics of atomic vibrations, whose evolution is well described by the linearized Boltzmann transport equation for the phonon populations. Recently, it was shown that thermal conductivity can be r ...

In this work we investigate numerically particle deposition in the buoyancy driven flow of the differentially heated cavity (DHC). We consider two values of the Rayleigh number (Ra = 10(9), 10(10)) and three values of the particle diameter (d(p) = 15, 25, ...

The Monge problem (Monge 1781; Taton 1951), as reformulated by Kantorovich (2006a, 2006b) is that of the transportation at a minimum "cost" of a given mass distribution from an initial to a final position during a given time interval. It is an optimal tran ...

Gravity currents are buoyancy-driven flows having a significant impact on the environment and human life. They can be observed in a vast range of natural and anthropogenic scenarios, such as seawater and freshwater, the atmosphere, or industrial processes. ...

Nowadays, the global increase of energy demand and the necessity to satisfy high safety standards have led engineers and scientists to focus their efforts in order to understand and describe fundamental phenomena that are crucial for a correct design of th ...

An a posteriori error estimate is derived for the approximation of the transport equation with a time dependent transport velocity. Continuous, piecewise linear, anisotropic finite elements are used for space discretization, the Crank-Nicolson scheme schem ...

Atomistic simulations are a bottom up approach that predict properties of materials by modelling the quantum mechanical behaviour of all electrons and nuclei present in a system. These simulations, however, routinely assume nuclei to be classical particles ...

We propose a novel Eulerian algorithm to compute the changes of a glacier geometry for given mass balances. The surface of a glacier is obtained by solving a transport equation for the volume of fluid (VOF). The surface mass balance is taken into account b ...

A numerical method for the simulation of the motion of a glacier in two and three dimensions is presented. Glacier ice is treated as an incompressible viscous fluid. The model equations are based on mass, momentum, energy conservation and a specific rheolo ...

This article discusses the life and work of Professor Srishti Dhar Chatterji, who passed away on September 28, 2017, in Lausanne, Switzerland, most suddenly and unexpectedly, after a very brief illness. Complete bibliographical information is included. (C) ...

We develop an elementary algebraic method to compute the center of the principal block of a small quantum group associated with a complex semisimple Lie algebra at a root of unity. The cases of sl(3) and sl(4) are computed explicitly. This allows us to for ...

The multiquery solution of parametric partial differential equations (PDEs), that is, PDEs depending on a vector of parameters, is computationally challenging and appears in several engineering contexts, such as PDE-constrained optimization, uncertainty qu ...
