This thesis addresses two urgent challenges in the pursuit of cleaner energy and environmental sustainability. First, it advances the quantification of problematic trace compounds in biogas derived from waste streams. Second, it refines rapid characterizat ...

Abstract The degradation of metal interconnects (ICs) in Solid Oxide Cells (SOCs) primarily results from chromium (Cr) oxide scale growth on stainless-steel substrates, causing ohmic loss and air-side electrode poisoning by Cr. This thesis addresses these ...

The value of operando and in situ characterization methodologies for understanding electrochemical systems under operation can be inferred from the upsurge of studies that have reported mechanistic insights into electrocatalytic processes based on such mea ...

Catalyst layers in proton exchange membrane fuel cells consist of platinum-group-metal nanocatalysts supported on carbon aggregates, forming a porous structure through which an ionomer network percolates. The local structural character of these heterogeneo ...

Cu-based bimetallic catalysts have attracted great attention for the reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction due to their high activity and selectivity. This work reports the application of Cu-In bimetallic catalysts for the RWGS reaction and demonstrates ...

The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is envisioned to play a significant role in achieving carbon neutrality while contributing to storing renewable energies. Cu-based materials are among the most promising electrocatalysts. However, 16 diffe ...

A novel type of iron conversion process has been recently developed to produce dense and adherent LaFeO3 perovskite coatings onto ferritic stainless steel surfaces by reaction with La2O3 dissolved in specially-formulated alkali molten carbonate baths. The ...

The hydroxide-exchange membrane fuel cell (HEMFC) is a promising energy conversion device. However, the development of HEMFC is hampered by the lack of platinum-group-metal-free (PGM-free) electrocatalysts for the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR). Now, a ...

The nature of the "forbidden" local- and long-range polar order in nominally nonpolar paraelectric phases of ferroelectric materials has been an open question since the discovery of ferroelectricity in oxide perovskites (ABO3). A currently considered model ...

Plasma nitriding was applied to ferritic stainless steel substrates to improve their performances as interconnects for solid oxide fuel cell devices. The samples underwent electrical conductivity test and SEM/EDS, TEM/EDS, environmental-SEM analyses. The f ...

Perovskite derived Ni catalysts offer the remarkable benefit of regeneration after catalyst poisoning or Ni particle growth through the reversible segregation of Ni from the perovskite-type oxide host. Although this property allows for repeated catalyst re ...

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) can convert hydrocarbon fuels, such as methane, into heat and electricity with a high conversion efficiency. The fuel flexibility of the SOFC derives from the high operating temperature (600-900 °C). Such a high temperature s ...

The experimental implementation of real-time optimization (RTO) to a commercial solid-oxide fuel-cell (SOFC) system is reported in this paper. The goal of RTO is to maximize the system efficiency at steady state subject to several operating constraints. Th ...

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are approaching commercialization to improve power production efficiency. Currently, cost and lifetime reliability limit their spread in the market. The SOFC is ceramic-based, but refractory metal alloys are in fact the major ...

This study examines the effect of Ni migration near the interface with the electrolyte after fuel cell (SOFC) and electrolysis mode (SOEC) operation on nickel-yttria stabilized zirconia (Ni-YSZ) electrodes. The experimental dataset consists in a series of ...

Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) based systems are co-generators of electricity and heat that excel for their high efficiency, low pollutant emissions and fuel flexibility. Their reliability is close to meet the requirements for market deployment. Recent resea ...

CeO2-based nanomaterials and their rich redox chemistry provide a possible route to pollutant abatement in various heterogeneous processes, and are in particular used as sorbents for flue gases and as oxygen promoters in three-way catalytic converters. The ...

Strontium migration from the oxygen electrode to the interface between the electrolyte and interlayer was investigated in solid oxide cells in fuel cell (SOFC) and electrolysis (SOEC) modes. Four samples were imaged by focused ion beam scanning electron mi ...

The number of studies on solid state ionic thin films (Nanoionics) has increased dramatically over last decades due to their high potential in micro and nanoscale technologies. Micro solid oxide fuel cells (micro-SOFC), and resistive switching memories (Re ...

In solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology a major challenge lies in balancing thermal stresses from an inevitable thermal field. The cells are known to creep, changing over time the stress field. The main objective of this study was to assess the influenc ...
