Aluminum nitride (AlN) is an emerging material platform for integrated photonics. It provides a wide transparency window (ultraviolet to mid-infrared) and enables versatile functionalities such as optical nonlinearities, pyroelectricity or piezoelectricity. While the sputter deposition for AlN thin films on silicon dioxide (SiO2) facilitates scalability and integration with other photonic platforms, accomplishing high-quality sputtered AlN thin films on SiO2 still bears some challenges. In this work we pres

Incorporating atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) materials with optical fibers expands their potential for optoelectronic applications. Recent advancements in chemical vapor deposition have enabled the batch production of these hybrid fibers, paving the way for practical implementation. However, their functionality remains constrained by the integration of a single 2D material, restricting their versatile performance. Here, we introduce a boron nitride/graphene (BN/Gr) heterostructure in the antiresonant

Amorphous zeolitic imidazolate framework (aZIF) films have been recently introduced as resists for electron beam and extreme ultraviolet lithography. aZIFs are also being considered for separation applications, including thin film membranes. However, the reported methods for aZIF deposition are currently based on highly empirical trial-and-error approaches that hinder control of film composition, thickness and uniformity as well as scale-up and transferability to different coating geometries. This work pres

The increase of nitrogen (N) deposition is a human-induced process associated with industry and agriculture that disrupts the nitrogen biogeochemical cycle. N deposition has been associated with environmental impacts such as land carbon sink increase, loss of biodiversity, and risk of eutrophication and acidity but further understanding of how N deposition affects trees of different environmental conditions, size, and leaf habit is missing. In this study, we use the ICP forest inventory data and the EMEP N

By controlling the deposition parameters of low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) grown ZnO transparent conductive oxide (TCO), we show that it is possible to achieve a switch of crystallographic orientations and to obtain novel surface nanotexture. The new layers are (0 0 0 2) oriented and exhibit light scattering at larger angles than state-of-the-art TCO used in thin film silicon solar cells. This property translates into a strong enhancement of the top amorphous cell current in micromorph tande

For building integration of solar-powered energy systems, aesthetic aspects play an important role. Covering a standard solar collector with a coloured glazing, opaque to the human eye but highly transparent to solar energy, permits a perfect architectural integration of solar thermal panels into glazed building façades. The thermal energy produced can be used for both solar heating and cooling, as well as for domestic hot water. The principle of the coloured appearance is based on interference in the thin-

We investigated the variation of N:P and N:K ratio in ombrotrophic Sphagnum plants along a gradient of atmospheric N deposition from 1 to 2.5 g m(-2) year(-1) in Central-East Europe. The N:P and N:K ratio in Sphagnum capitula increased significantly along the N deposition gradient. Sphagnum species from the Cuspidata section were characterised by significantly lower ratios at low N deposition. When we compared the observed N:P ratios in Sphagnum plants with the values reported in a previous European-wide st

Thin-film Si solar module production requires a fast wide area tool for layer characteristic measurement and control. Non-uniformity in layer deposition is expected to induce loss in module power. Simulations of amorphous Si modules using a two-dimensional model have been used to examine the efficiency loss associated with non uniformity of large scale monolithically integrated thin film modules. The results indicate that non uniform deposition significantly lowers the module efficiency, in a magnitude that

The characterization of Fe/ZSM5 zeolite materials, the nature of Fe-sites active in N2O direct decomposition, as well as the rate limiting step are still a matter of debate. The mechanism of N2O decomposition on the binuclear oxo-hydroxo bridged extraframework iron core site [FeII(m-O)(m-OH)FeII]+ inside the ZSM-5 zeolite has been studied by combining theoretical and experimental approaches. The overall calculated path of N2O decomposition involves the oxidation of binuclear FeII core sites by N2O (atomic a

In this paper, we investigate the performance of a piezoelectric membrane actuated by an epitaxial piezoelectric Pb(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O-3 (PZT) thin film for localized-mass sensing applications. The fabrication and characterization of piezoelectric circular membranes based on epitaxial thin films prepared on a silicon wafer are presented. The dynamic behavior and mass sensing performance of the proposed structure are experimentally investigated and compared to numerical analyses. A 1500 mu m diameter silicon membr

Diffusion of carbon is the crucial step in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) On metal nanoparticles. Using first principles techniques we model the binding and diffusion of carbon atoms and dimers on late transition (Ni, Pd, Pt) and coinage (Cu, Ag, Au) metal catalysts. We consider various diffusion mechanisms including both surface and subsurface channels, finding the lowest activation barriers for carbon adatoms on nanoparticles of coinage metals. For these metals, our calc

We have developed hybrid AFM probes with SU-8 polymer body and full platinum and tungsten cantilever and tip. The fabrication process uses surface micromachining of a (100) silicon wafer. The metal (platinum or tungsten) is sputter deposited in oxidation sharpened moulds, giving a final tip sharpness smaller than 20 nm. A SU-8 body is subsequently formed. The release is either done by a wet back-side or dry top-side process. The measured hardness of the tungsten and platinum film values 14.8 GPa and 7.3 GPa

The endeavour to develop nanodevices demands for patterning methods in the nanoscale. To bring nanodevices to the market, there is a need for fast, low-cost replication nanopatterning methods. In addition, an increased flexibility of the nanopatterning methods is important for the engineering of multimaterial and multifunctional nano/micro-electro-mechanical systems (NEMS/MEMS), such as polymer-based electronic and sensor devices, 3D microfluidic systems, and bio-analytical systems. A series of alternative,

Deposition of a hydrothermal method has a number of advantages; low deposition temperature, high-purity, deposition on a three-dimensional structure, and a large thickness. The present paper investigates the improvement of an epitaxial lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin film deposited via hydrothermal synthesis. The critical parameter contributing to the film morphology was revealed to be the holding position of the reaction solution during deposition. In addition to this improvement, the SrRuO3 bottom elec

When AxGa1-xAs layers are grown on V-grooved GaAs substrates by metal organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD), a Ga rich vertical quantum well (VQW) appears in the V-groove centre. The width and Ga enrichment of this structure depend on the nominal Al concentration and growth temperature. From EELS linescans and spectrum images, concentration profiles and maps of VQWs are obtained, and a subsequent bandstructure calculation shows up to three confined sublevels in the VQW. Carrier confinement in segments

Uniaxial fragmentation tests were carried out in situ in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) on 10-nm-thick silicon oxide coatings deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition on poly(ethylene terephthalate). In order to prevent charging effects due to the isolating nature of the oxide surface, an additional conductive gold layer was sputtered onto the coating prior to its tensile loading in the SEM chamber. The gold layer was shown not to affect initiation of tensile failure of the oxide coating

A new nondestructive method for measuring the spatial distribution of chromatic dispersion along an optical fiber is presented. It is based on using Brillouin optical time-domain analysis to probe the power distribution of the four-wave mixing generated by two continuous-wave lasers. The results obtained prove that this new method is capable of providing better performance than comparable techniques. Furthermore, sensing the variations of Brillouin gain maximum produces additional information about the fibe

In YBa2Cu3O6+x the tetragonal to orthorhombic transition occurs around x equals 0.3, followed by a continuum variation of lattice parameters. Hence both, the structural and superconducting properties, depend upon the oxygen content in CuO chains. Conversely, the epitaxial stress, exerted by the substrate on YBCO films, modified the lattice parameters, influencing the oxygen stability in the chains. The understanding of this mechanism is essential when growing epitaxial films for in-situ photoemission studie

Nickel-aluminium intermetallics constitute interesting systems for the study of irradiation-induced phase transformations (order → disorder, amorphization) and production of defects. Irradiation of ordered intermetallics may induce disorder or amorphization depending on the projectile characteristics, irradiation conditions and chemical and physical properties of the target. The behavior of the various intermetallic compounds of the nickel-aluminium system with respect to electron and ion irradiation has be

Electrode stability, interdiffusion, phase purity and deviation from stoichiometry at the PZT-electrode interface are key issues in PZT thin film integration. This article highlights the use of transmission electron imaging combined with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) for the investigation of these phenomena. The accuracy of the EDS analysis is discussed. It will be shown that using a standard PZT sample and controlled conditions, reliable analysis can be performed. Diffusion mechanisms have been stud
