Deep neural networks trained on physical losses are emerging as promising surrogates for nonlinear numerical solvers. These tools can predict solutions to Maxwell's equations and compute gradients of output fields with respect to the material and geometric ...

Neural network approaches to approximate the ground state of quantum hamiltonians require the numerical solution of a highly nonlinear optimization problem. We introduce a statistical learning approach that makes the optimization trivial by using kernel me ...

Fluid-driven frictional ruptures are important in a broad range of subsurface engineering technologies and natural earthquake-related phenomena. Some examples of subsurface operations where borehole fluid injections can induce frictional slip are deep geot ...

In the last decade, deep neural networks have achieved tremendous success in many fields of machine learning. However, they are shown vulnerable against adversarial attacks: well-designed, yet imperceptible, perturbations can make the state-of-the-art deep ...

Fault diagnosis plays an essential role in reducing the maintenance costs of rotating machinery manufacturing systems. In many real applications of fault detection and diagnosis, data tend to be imbalanced, meaning that the number of samples for some fault ...

The intershaft bearing is located between the high and low-pressure rotors of the aero-engine, where the working environment is harsh, the load variation range is large, and the lubrication and heat dissipation are poor. The fault of the intershaft bearing ...

The localization of electromagnetic interference (EMI) sources is of high importance in electromagnetic compatibility applications. Recently, a novel localization technique based on the time-reversal cavity (TRC) concept was proposed using only one sensor, ...

The existing Electromagnetic Time Reversal (EMTR)-based fault location methods generally leverage the features of the signals simulated in the EMTR reversed-time stage (relative to the direct-time stage wherein a fault occurs and its originated transient s ...

Tectonic faults typically break in a single rupture mode within the range of styles from slow slip to dynamic earthquake failure. However, in increasingly well-documented instances, the same fault segment fails in both slow and fast modes within a short pe ...

The time-reversal invariance is readily described and universally embodied in most laws of nature, either in a strict or in a soft sense. Based on this underlying physical principle, time-reversal theory has been theoretically and experimentally studied in ...

Rapid progress in all types of communication systems imposes each time more strict requirements on the communication devices, requiring having the overall device's size as small as possible, but also increasing the demands on the robustness of the transmis ...

The thesis focuses on the study of the performance of TBMs in highly jointed and faulted rocks. Despite the great production rates recorded in favourable ground conditions, the TBM advance can be significantly slowed down in limiting geological situations ...

By using the electromagnetic time reversal (EMTR) theory, the paper studies its properties in order to derive a new fault location method to be used in power networks. It is shown that, in the reversed-time stage, the current signal observed at the true fa ...

We develop a non-intrusive reduced basis (RB) method for parametrized steady-state partial differential equations (PDEs). The method extracts a reduced basis from a collection of high-fidelity solutions via a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and emplo ...

In the last years, numerous seismological evidences have shown a strict correlation between fluid injection and seismicity. An important topic that is currently under discussion in the scientific community concerns the prediction of the earthquake magnitud ...

The band structure of many semiconducting monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possesses two degenerate valleys with equal and opposite Berry curvature. It has been predicted that, when illuminated with circularly polarized light, interband tr ...

We present an alternative method based on the time-reversal process to locate faults in transmission line networks. The proposed procedure considers different media for the forward and the backward propagation phases. Specifically, the transverse branch re ...

In the past decade, image classification systems have witnessed major advances that led to record performances on challenging datasets. However, little is known about the behavior of these classifiers when the data is subject to perturbations, such as rand ...

This paper explores the potential and limitations of analog integrated circuit techniques for the simulation of low-loss or lossless 1D or 2D transmission mediums. In this approach, a transmission line is mapped into a ladder consisting of N identical LC e ...
