We demonstrate an integrated Erbium-based tunable laser using wafer-scale fabrication and ion implantation of silicon nitride photonic integrated circuits. We achieve single-frequency lasing tunable from 1530 nm to 1621 nm covering nearly the entire optica ...

Kerr soliton microcombs have the potential to disrupt a variety of applications such as ultra-high-speed optical communications, ultra-fast distance measurements, massively parallel light detection and ranging (LiDAR) or high-resolution optical spectroscop ...

The manipulation of quantum materials by light constitutes a new emergent field in condensed matter systems. Strong light-matter coupling and ultrafast optics are powerful tools for inducing new quantum phases in strongly correlated systems, with one parti ...

We demonstrate a packaging approach to integrate electrical and optical connections in silicon photonic MEMS, utilizing a custom-designed silicon interposer for routing over 118 electrical connections and a 72 channel fiber array to couple to on-chip fiber ...

In this thesis work, we propose to exploit an innovative micro/nano-fabrication process, based on controlled fluid instabilities of a thin viscous film of chalcogenide glass. Amorphous selenium and arsenic triselenide were used in this thesis work, and com ...

Controlling audible sound requires inherently broadband and subwavelength acoustic solutions, which are to date, crucially missing. This includes current noise absorption methods, such as porous materials or acoustic resonators, which are typically ineffic ...

We propose and demonstrate dendrimer-based coatings for a sensitive biochip surface that enhance the high-performance sorption of small molecules (i.e., biomolecules with low molecular weights) and the sensitivity of a label-free, real-time photonic crysta ...

Optical resonators enable the generation, manipulation, and storage of electromagnetic waves. The physics underlying their operation is determined by the interference of electromagnetic waves, giving rise to the resonance spectrum. This mechanism causes th ...

Semiconductor materials have given rise to today's digital technology and consumer electronics. Widespread adoption is closely linked to the ability to process and integrate them in devices at scale. Where flexibility and large surfaces are required, such ...

Although graphene has met many of its initially predicted optoelectronic, thermal, and mechanical properties, photodetectors with large spectral bandwidths and extremely high frequency responses remain outstanding. In this work, we demonstrate a >500 gigah ...

Fields of technology as diverse as microwave filter construction, characterization of material interfaces with atomic precision, and detection of gravitational waves from astronomical sources employ mechanical resonators at their core. The utility of mecha ...

This work reports on the design and fabrication of fundamental shear horizontal (SH0) mode acoustic resonators based on a suspended lithium niobate (LNO) film at 1.04 GHz. Due to the large e16 piezoelectric coefficient of YX36 degrees.-cut LNO, fabricated ...

Tip-enhanced optical effects have enabled a wide palette of nanoscale investigation techniques and recently they were successfully used to modify and manipulate matter with nanoscale spatial resolution. We contribute to this latter area by reporting a viab ...

Non-linear materials are cornerstones of modern optics and electronics. Strong dependence on the intrinsic properties of particular materials, however, inhibits the at-will extension of demanding non-linear effects, especially those second-order ones, to w ...

Cavities concentrate light and enhance its interaction with matter. Confining to microscopic volumes is necessary for many applications but space constraints in such cavities limit the design freedom. Here we demonstrate stable optical microcavities by cou ...

Carrier-envelope phase (CEP) detection of ultrashort optical pulses and low-energy waveform field sampling have recently been demonstrated using direct time-domain methods that exploit optical-field photoemission from plasmonic nanoantennas. These devices ...

The possibility to perform distributed measurements of the effective refractive index difference between distinct modes in few mode optical fibers is demonstrated using phase sensitive optical time domain reflectometry. Effective refractive index differenc ...

Tunable metamaterials functionalities change in response to external stimuli. Mechanical deformation is known to be an efficient approach to tune the electromagnetic response of a deformable metamaterial. However, in the case of large mechanical deformatio ...

The pursuit of high-speed and on-chip optical communication systems has promoted extensive exploration of all-optical control of light-matter interactions via nonlinear optical processes. Here, we have numerically investigated the ultrafast dynamic switchi ...

Electro-optic modulators are essential for sensing, metrology and telecommunications. Most target fiber applications. Instead, metasurface-based architectures that modulate free-space light at gigahertz (GHz) speeds can boost flat optics technology by micr ...
