Building on recent advances of the embedded cluster approach combined with multiconfigurational theory, this work investigates the electronic states in thorium-doped CaF2 crystals. Th:CaF2 is established as a promising material for solid-state nuclear cloc ...

This thesis investigates the magnetic properties of single atoms and molecules adsorbed on thin magnesium oxide decoupling layers, grown on a silver single crystal. To address these systems experimentally, we use a low temperature scanning tunneling micros ...

We report the development of a continuous-wave and pulsed X-band electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometer for the study of spins on ordered surfaces down to cryogenic temperatures. The spectrometer operates in ultra-high vacuum and utilizes a half-wavele ...

Flow reshaping is used in time-sensitive networks (as in the context of IEEE TSN and IETF Detnet) in order to reduce burstiness inside the network and to support the computation of guaranteed latency bounds. This is performed using per-flow regulators (suc ...

Wildfires are getting more severe and destructive. Due to their fast-spreading nature, wildfires are often detected when already beyond control and consequently cause billion-scale effects in a very short time. Governments are looking for remote sensing me ...

We characterize a 1.14 mu m ultrastable semiconductor laser system for precision spectroscopy of Tm inner-shell clock transition using a frequency comb. We stabilize both the repetition and the carrier-envelope offset frequencies of a commercial Ti : sapph ...

The authors present the realisation and characterisation of an additively manufactured (AM) microwave resonator cavity for double-resonance (DR) vapour-cell atomic clocks. The design of the compact microwave cavity is based on the loop-gap resonator approa ...

Solving native structures of such large molecules, like biomolecules, is often challenging, particularly due to the potentially infinite number of non-covalent interactions with water. In this thesis, we report the use of cold ion gas-phase action spectros ...

Additive manufacturing (AM) of passive microwave components is of high interest for the cost-effective and rapid prototyping or manufacture of devices with complex geometries. Here, we present an experimental study on the properties of recently demonstrate ...

Optical-frequency synthesizers, which generate frequency-stable light from a single microwave-frequency reference, are revolutionizing ultrafast science and metrology, but their size, power requirement and cost need to be reduced if they are to be more wid ...

To miniaturize the double-resonance (DR) rubidium (Rb) vapor-cell atomic clocks, a new type of micro-loop-gap microwave resonator (mu-LGR) is proposed for TE011-like mode where the magnetic field inside the cavity is homogeneous and oriented along its long ...

Digital silicon photo-multipliers (SiPMs) have emerged in the recent past as a viable low cost alternative to photomultiplier tubes in positron emission tomography systems, providing multiple timestamps, energy and scintillation coordinates at high spatial ...

Vapor-cell atomic clocks based on double resonance are high-precision instruments that have strong potential for industrial commercialization. They offer performance which is superior to quartz oscillators and are already employed for synchronization-deman ...

Proteins and even small peptides play crucial role in almost any biological. Biological activity and functionality of these building blocks of life are determined not only by their primary structure, but also by their 3D orientation â secondary, tertiary ...

The work presented in this thesis covers two different topics of surface science, both investigated with the scanning tunneling miscroscopy and spectroscopy at low temperatures (5~K). First, we are interested in the spectroscopic properties of physisorbed ...

We report our studies on the new designed magnetron-type microwave cavity operating in the TE011-like mode, at the rubidium hyperfine ground-state frequency of about 6.835 GHz. The properties of the cavity resonance were studied as a function of cavity tem ...

Safety-critical navigation applications require that estimation errors be reliably quantified and bounded. Over the last decade, significant effort has been put to guarantee a bounded position estimation by using Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) ...

In this case study, we apply the architecture-based design approach to the control software of the CubETH satellite. Architectures are a means for ensuring global coordination properties and thus, achieving correctness of complex systems by construction. T ...

Atomic clocks are a vital technology in the day to day operation of modern society. While passive Rb and Cs microwave atomic clocks find widespread practical applications today, active atomic clocks have the potential to surpass them in frequency stability ...

Three-dimensional (3-D) or vertical integration is a design and packaging paradigm that can mitigate many of the increasing challenges related to the design of modern integrated systems. 3-D circuits have recently been at the spotlight, since these circuit ...
