Students learn more when they are actively engaged in the learning process. While hands-on activities, labs and projects are moments when students are active, the learning benefits can be amplified with coaching strategies. This activity will enable studen ...

The importance of psychological safety in teams has been demonstrated in different settings. Team performance improves when team climate allows team members to be their authentic selves, to ask questions and raise concerns comfortably. However, it is less ...

Digital technology has become an integral part of our lives, offering various benefits from communication and entertainment to education and productivity. However, its pervasive use has also raised concerns about its potential negative impact on users' wel ...

In recent years, there has been widespread concern about misinformation and hateful content on social media that are damaging societies. Being one of the most influential social media that practically serves as a newsearch engine, YouTube has accepted crit ...

Reinterpretable cameras are defined by their post-processing capabilities that exceed traditional imaging. We present "SoDaCam" that provides reinterpretable cameras at the granularity of photons, from photon-cubes acquired by single-photon devices. Photon ...

In this paper, we introduce a new solution and underlying architecture that allows remote participants to interact with hosts in a broadcast scenario. To achieve this, background extraction is first applied to video received from remote participants to ext ...

The past few decades have seen important efforts to introduce more ethics into engineering education programs around the world, while adapting to the evolution of ethical concerns, notably in relation to digital technology and artificial intelligence. Even ...

In event-based sensing, many sensors independently and asynchronously emit events when there is a change in their input. Event-based sensing can present significant improvements in power efficiency when compared to traditional sampling, because (1) the out ...

Despite the increasing popularity of massive open online courses (MOOCs), many suffer from high dropout and low success rates. Early prediction of student success for targeted intervention is therefore essential to ensure no student is left behind in a cou ...

Online education platforms play an increasingly important role in mediating the success of individuals' careers. Therefore, while building overlying content recommendation services, it becomes essential to guarantee that learners are provided with equal re ...

As event-based sensing gains in popularity, theoretical understanding is needed to harness this technology’s potential. Instead of recording video by capturing frames, event-based cameras have sensors that emit events when their inputs change, thus encodin ...

The emergence of digital technology is changing education in many ways. A particularly interesting aspect of this transformation is the development of learning environments that can automatically adapt to individual students and can collect data in order t ...

In this paper, we attempt to show some consequences of bringing the body back into higher education, through the use of performing arts in the curricular context of scientific programs. We start by arguing that dominant traditions in higher education repro ...

By offering courses and resources, learning platforms on the Web have been attracting lots of participants, and the interactions with these systems have generated a vast amount of learning-related data. Their collection, processing and analysis have promot ...

In this paper we examine the impacts of the global pandemic in 2020 on different levels of education system, particularly looking at the changes in teaching practice. The health emergency caused closure of schools, and online distance education became a te ...

Purpose Within higher education, there was an abrupt shift from face-to-face to online lecturing with the introduction of social distancing measures in light of a global pandemic. The purpose of this study is to enrich the connection between students and i ...

Educational technologies are often developed such that students work on specific social levels (e.g., individual, small group, whole class) at specific times. However, in the reality of the classroom, learning activities are not so cleanly divided, with tr ...

Inductive reasoning is an important educational practice but can be difficult for teachers to support in the classroom due to the high level of preparation and classroom time needed to choose the teaching materials that challenge students' current views. I ...

The interaction with the various learners in a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is often complex. Contemporary MOOC learning analytics relate with click-streams, keystrokes and other user-input variables. Such variables however, do not always capture lear ...

In this paper we describe our approach to teaching applied digital signal processing (DSP) using freely-available software and inexpensive off-the-shelf hardware components. The pedagogical framework is built around simple real-time audio processing algori ...
