Biorefineries hold the potential to provide products and energy carriers at reduced environmental impact compared to their fossil-based counterparts. Thus, they can contribute to the decarbonization of sectors in which electrification of demands is challen ...

The transition towards renewable energy is leading to an important strain on the energy grids. The question of designing and deploying renewable energy technologies in symbiosis with existing grids and infrastructure is arising. While current energy system ...

Distributed rooftop photovoltaics (PV) is one of the pillars of the energy transition yet their widespread integration strains grids, leading to over-voltage, reverse power flow, and infrastructure strain. Furthermore, increased PV self-consumption reduces ...

The paper presents a method for the co-optimization of energy storage systems allocation and line reinforcement in active distribution networks. The objective is to guarantee the capability of an active distribution network to follow a dispatch plan by app ...

In this work, a systematic approach combining different energy solutions and the time-varying energy demands is used to identify the operating conditions and arrangements for industrial complexes. A kraft pulp mill integrated to an urban district heating n ...

The increasing application of voltage source converter (VSC) based high voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) technology in power grids has raised the importance of incorporating DC grids and converters into the existing transmission network. This poses signif ...

This work presents an optimization framework to aggregate the power and energy flexibilities in an interconnected power distribution systems. The aggregation framework is used to compute the day-ahead dispatch plans of multiple and interconnected distribut ...

The concept of a multi-source inverter (MSI) based on NPC topology was recently introduced for hybrid-electric powertrains to connect several dc sources to the traction load in a single conversion stage without magnetics. This work proposes a new modulatio ...

The latest developments in dc transformer technology are enabling larger and more complex dc power distribution systems. However, the literature is scarce regarding the investigation and quantification of its impact on the dc grid. Therefore, this paper an ...

Three-Dimensional Multi-Processor Systems-on-Chip (3D MPSoCs) are promising solutions for highly intensive Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data applications. They combine remarkably dense computation capabilities and massive communication bandwidths. ...

In the framework of the XFLEX HYDRO H2020 European Project, a 5 MW reversible Francis pump-turbine prototype, equipped with an industrial full size frequency converter, is investigated to demonstrate enhanced grid regulation capacities of variable speed hy ...

Modular multilevel converters achieve voltage scalability through the series connection of cells, each with its own capacitance. However, this converter structure using floating energy storage elements increases the control complexity significantly. The vo ...

In recent years, power systems have evolved in physical and cyber-physical layers. In the physical layer, the changes are motivated by environmental concerns resulting in the integration of new types of generation/demand/storage into the grid. These integr ...

Electric vehicles (EVs) are already part of today's reality and their number is expected to grow rapidly in the near future. A large-scale penetration of EVs will increase the power consumption during charging periods. Hence, the uncoordinated and random c ...

In this paper, we present an exact (i.e. non-approximated) and linear measurement model for hybrid AC/DC micro-grids for recursive state estimation (SE). More specifically, an exact linear model of a voltage source converter (VSC) is proposed. It relies on ...

Future low-carbon societies will need to store vast amounts of electricity to stabilize electricity grids and to power electric vehicles. Vehicle-to-grid allows vehicle owners and grid operators to share the costs of electricity storage by making the batte ...
