In this work, we investigate the relationship between continuous-time autoregressive (AR) models and their sampled version. We consider uniform sampling and derive criteria for uniquely determining the continuous-time parameters from sampled data; the mode ...

The local Callan-Symanzik equation describes the response of a quantum field theory to local scale transformations in the presence of background sources. The consistency conditions associated with this anomalous equation imply non-trivial relations among t ...

The transposition of atmospheric turbulence statistics from the time domain, as conventionally sampled in field experiments, is explained by the so-called ergodic hypothesis. In micrometeorology, this hypothesis assumes that the time average of a measured ...

This thesis was carried out within the framework of a scientific cooperation project entitled “Application of High Power Electromagnetics to Human Safety” developed by the EPFL, the National University of Colombia and Los Andes University, Colombia. The pr ...

The fundamental mechanisms responsible for the interplay and synergy between the absorption dynamics of extraordinary-mode electron cyclotron waves at two different harmonic resonances (the 2nd and 3rd) are investigated in the TCV tokamak. An enhanced 3rd ...

Industry applications involving torque brushless dc motors require high efficiency over a large speed range. In order to achieve such specifications, flux weakening is necessary, which could lead to relative high electromagnetically induced vibrations and ...

Optical tweezers are devices that can manipulate nano- and microparticles using a laser. The principle of optical tweezers is to apply a force to an object using the momentum of light. This force is very small, but it is sufficient to move things in the mi ...

The response of simple plasmonic nanorods to polarized illumination is studied in detail. Depending on the orientation of that polarization with respect to the symmetry axes of the nanostructure, a chiral response can occur, which can be analyzed through a ...

This study compares three imputation methods applied to the field observations of hydraulic head in subsurface hydrology. Hydrogeological studies that analyze the timeseries of groundwater elevations often face issues with missing data that may mislead bot ...

An ab initio theory for Fano resonances in plasmonic nanostructures and metamaterials is de- veloped using Feshbach formalism. It reveals the role played by the electromagnetic modes and material losses in the system, and enables the engineering of Fano re ...

Strain is inevitable in two-dimensional (2D) materials, regardless of whether the film is suspended or supported. However, the direct measurement of strain response at the atomic scale is challenging due to the difficulties of maintaining both flexibility ...

The article studies estimation of Delta = p(1) - p(2), the difference of two proportions p(1) and p(2), based on two independent Binomial experiments of size n(1) and n(2). The usual estimator, the difference between the two sample proportions, is variance ...

Polarimetric angle-resolved second-harmonic scattering (AR-SHS) is an all-optical tool enabling the study of unlabeled interfaces of nano-sized particles in an aqueous solution. As the second harmonic signal is modulated by interference between nonlinear c ...

The aim of structural performance monitoring is to infer the state of a structure from measurements and thereby support decisions related to structural management. Complex structures may be equipped with hundreds of sensors that measure quantities such as ...

In this thesis, we discuss the problems of scattering and optical manipulation related to nanosystems of different complexities. The multipolar decomposition method is used to represent scattering processes in nanosystems as a series of elementary excitati ...
