In this chapter, we discussed the TL theory and its application to the problem of lightning electromagnetic field coupling to transmission lines. After a short discussion on the underlying assumptions of the TL theory, we described seemingly different but ...

We study the problem of learning unknown parameters of stochastic dynamical models from data. Often, these models are high dimensional and contain several scales and complex structures. One is then interested in obtaining a reduced, coarse-grained descript ...

Functional time series is a temporally ordered sequence of not necessarily independent random curves. While the statistical analysis of such data has been traditionally carried out under the assumption of completely observed functional data, it may well ha ...

In general, space-time wave packets with correlations between transverse spatial fields and temporal frequency spectra can lead to unique spatiotemporal dynamics, thus enabling control of the instantaneous light properties. However, spatiotemporal dynamics ...

Quantum optics studies how photons interact with other forms of matter, the understanding of which was crucial for the development of quantum mechanics as a whole. Starting from the photoelectric effect, the quantum property of light has led to the develop ...

Synchrotron radiation observed in a quiescent Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV) runaway discharge is studied using filtered camera images targeting three distinct wavelength intervals. Through the tomographic simultaneous algebraic reconstruction tech ...

Vibrational Raman scattering-a process where light exchanges energy with a molecular vibration through inelastic scattering-is most fundamentally described in a quantum framework where both light and vibration are quantized. When the Raman scatterer is emb ...

In conformal field theory in Minkowski momentum space, the 3-point correlation functions of local operators are completely fixed by symmetry. Using Ward identities together with the existence of a Lorentzian operator product expansion (OPE), we show that t ...

Each of the four ITER electron cyclotron heating (ECH) upper launchers (ULs) features eight transmission lines (TLs) made of guided-wave components used to inject 170-GHz microwave power into the plasma at a level of up to 1.31 MW per line, at the TL diamo ...

This paper discusses and analyzes two domain decomposition approaches for electromagnetic problems that allow the combination of domains discretized by either Nédélec-type polynomial finite elements or spline-based isogeometric analysis. The first approach ...

Optical soliton molecules are bound states of solitons that arise from the balance between attractive and repulsive effects. Having been observed in systems ranging from optical fibres to mode-locked lasers, they provide insights into the fundamental inter ...

Vibration tests were performed on 3 large-scale timber slabs using wood-wood connections with a span of 8.1 meters. 10 impulsive vibration tests per specimen were performed to estimate the initial natural frequency. Vibrations were triggered using a hammer ...

Cloaking via transformation optics was introduced by Pendry, Schurig, and Smith for the Maxwell system and Leonhardt in the geometric optics setting. They used a singular change of variables which blows up a point into a cloaked region. The same transforma ...

Time-averaged spatially resolved measurements are used in many fields of physics to determine spatial distributions of a physical quantity. Although one could think that time averaging suppresses all information on time variation, there are some situations ...

We present an exact mathematical framework for electromagnetic wave propagation in periodically time-modulated media, in which the permittivity is homogenous and modulated in a step-varying fashion. By using Hill’s equation theory, we show that this proble ...

This paper summarizes the work on the manufacturing and testing of conductor samples for ITER poloidal field 1&6 coils. The work was carried out by the IO and multiple institutions in the EU, Switzerland and Russia. Five samples were manufactured and teste ...

This paper presents two methods to compute scale anomaly coefficients in conformal field theories (CFTs), such as the c anomaly in four dimensions, in terms of the CFT data. We first use Euclidean position space to show that the anomaly coefficient of a fo ...

Why are classical theories often sufficient to describe the physics of our world even though everything around us is entirely composed of microscopic quantum systems? The boundary between these two fundamentally dissimilar theories remains an unsolved prob ...

The shielding performance of different buildings in presence of indirect lightning return strokes are investigated directly in the time domain. To this end, a sensitivity analysis is conducted by varying the channel geometrical characteristics and consider ...

Method for measuring a distribution of a physical variable in a region, comprising the step of: measuring an average value of the physical variable along each of a plurality of lines in said region; estimating the distribution of the physical variable in s ...
