Iron-based shape memory alloys (Fe-SMAs) are e-merging materials with extensive application in civil structures owing to their unique properties, including the shape memory effect. However, it is crucial to understand the time dependent behavior of Fe-SMAs ...

Prediction of ground motion triggered by earthquakes is a prime concern for both the seismology community and geotechnical earthquake engineering one. The subfield occupied with such a problem is termed site response analysis (SRA), its one-dimensional fla ...

We discuss the multiscale modeling of a granular material trapped between continuum elastic domains. The amorphous granular region, usually termed “gouge,” is under high confinement pressure, to represent the loading of faults at depth. We model the granul ...

Hot deformation behavior of the extruded Mg-6Gd-3Y (GW63) and Mg-6Gd-3Y-1Ag (GW63-1Ag) alloys was assessed by shear punch testing (SPT) method in the temperature range of 623 K to 723 K and shear strain rate of 1.6 x 10(-2)to 1.3 x 10(-1) s(-1). Microstruc ...

The complex mechanics of porous and granular media play a significant role in various industrial processes and natural phenomena. As an example, understanding the mechanics of how failure occurs, localizes and propagates in porous brittle solids under vari ...

We introduce the Reduced Immersed Method (RIM) for the real-time simulation of two-way coupled incompressible fluids and elastic solids and the interaction of multiple deformables with (self-)collisions. Our framework is based on a novel discretization of ...

A general constitutive equation was established using the theory of viscoelasticity in order to consider the interaction of the time- and cyclic-dependent mechanical properties of laminated composites. This equation was solved for two specific loading patt ...

Model-free data-driven computational mechanics (DDCM) is a new paradigm for simulations in solid mechanics. The modeling step associated to the definition of a material constitutive law is circumvented through the introduction of an abstract phase space in ...

Sustainable development has emerged as a paramount consideration in various fields of industry, including construction, to preserve the environment and its finite resources. Lightweight structures, such as fiber-polymer composite structures, address both s ...

The Task 7 of the EBS task force is devoted to the modelling of gas transport phenomena in bentonite. This report describes the second phase of Task 7 that concerns the finite element modelling of some specific tests performed on granular bentonite to asse ...

In this study, TC-PRISMA was employed to simulate the precipitation (number density and radius) of an FeMnSi-based shape memory alloy (FeMnSi-SMA), with a chemical composition of Fe-17Mn-5Si-10Cr-4Ni-1(V, C) (wt%), during one-step and two-step aging proces ...

The constitutive modeling of shales is an important topic in the geomechanics community as it is often encountered in advanced applications such as nuclear waste storage, CO2 sequestration, and unconventional oil and gas exploitation. The goal of this work ...

Metal fatigue during cyclic loading puts an endurance limit on most of today's technology. It impacts the reliability of metallic components used for transportation, electronic devices and energy production because fatigue failure can occur without any app ...

Shales have become increasingly important because they play key roles in modern energy and environmental geomechanics applications, such as nuclear waste storage, non-conventional oil and gas operations and CO2 geological storage. Shale behaves in a quasi- ...

This work presents a comprehensive open-source simulation and design tool for Soft pneumatic actuators (SPAs) using finite element method, compatible and extensible to a diverse range of soft materials and design parameters. Thorough characterization of th ...

A precise knowledge of co-axial flow dynamics and a better understanding of the mechanisms that act to destabilize the interface between the two fluids is of fundamental interest in many industrial applications like lubricated transport, injection devices, ...

The load-carrying capacity of many reinforced concrete structures is governed by shear failures, occurring before reaching the flexural capacity of the member. For redundant systems, such as slabs subjected to concentrated loads, local shear failures (typi ...

A constitutive model that couples elastic-plastic and damage theories is developed to predict the mechanical behavior of a shale from the Mont Terri rock laboratory (Opalinus Clay). The framework of continuum damage mechanics allows to predict the degradat ...

Over the last two decades, we have witnessed an increasing application of mathematical models and numerical simulations for the study of the cardiovascular system. Indeed, both tools provide an important contribution to the analysis of the functioning of t ...
