In this paper we present a scalable and exact solution for probabilistic linear discriminant analysis (PLDA). PLDA is a probabilistic model that has been shown to provide state-of-the-art performance for both face and speaker recognition. However, it has o ...

This open access book allows the reader to grasp the main bulk of fluid flow problems at a brisk pace. Starting with the basic concepts of conservation laws developed using continuum mechanics, the incompressibility of a fluid is explained and modeled, lea ...

In the nanoscale regime, flow behaviors for liquids show qualitative deviations from bulk expectations. In this work, we reveal by molecular dynamics simulations that plug flow down to nanoscale induces molecular friction that leads to a new flow structure ...

We introduce a generic convex energy functional that is suitable for both grayscale and vector-valued images. Our functional is based on the eigenvalues of the structure tensor, therefore it penalizes image variation at every point by taking into account t ...

Rheology of powder suspensions is a key factor in many processing routes, and better understanding of the parameters that control the rheology improves technical progress by reducing the empirical factors in the formulation of powder slurries. The strict r ...

The presence of aerodynamic vortices is widespread in nature. They can be found at small scales near the wing tip of flying insects or at bigger scale in the form of hurricanes, cyclones or even galaxies. They are identified as coherent regions of high vor ...

The tightening emission regulations have led to the development of commercial DOCs with zoned or layered formulations allowing to cover a wide range of functionalities (i.e. CO, HC and NO oxidation as well as HC or NOx trap). Aging phenomena in such comple ...

Energy supply routes to a given region are subject to random events, resulting in partial or total closure of a route (corridor). For instance: a pipeline may be subject to technical problems that reduce its capacity. Or, oil supply by tanker may be reduce ...

The trends in the design of image sensors are to build sensors with low noise, high sensitivity, high dynamic range, and small pixel size. How can we benefit from pixels with small size and high sensitivity? In this dissertation, we study a new image senso ...

We propose a theoretical approach to derive amplitude equations governing the weakly nonlinear evolution of non-normal dynamical systems, when they experience transient growth or respond to harmonic forcing. This approach reconciles the non-modal nature of ...

The tasks of electrical micro- and nanoprobing require precision that goes beyond human perception and therefore, depend on sensors providing real-time feedback. Efforts towards automation in micro- and nanoprobing and emerging areas such as branched nanow ...

We investigate in the present work the fabrication of polymer-based micro-fluidic and micro-mechanical devices using sacrificial, resistive/conductive pastes, through a screen-printing process. An organic sacrificial paste is first screen-printed onto a su ...
