This paper considers vessel scheduling with pilotage and tugging constraints in berthing operations with channel restrictions at seaports. To our knowledge, pilotage and tugging requirements have not been simultaneously considered in the literature. This w ...

The formulation of inverse problems in the continuum eliminates discretization errors and allows for the exact incorporation of priors. In this paper, we formulate a continuous-domain inverse problem over a search space of continuous and piecewise-linear f ...

Trimming is a common operation in computer aided design and, in its simplest formulation, consists in removing superfluous parts from a geometric entity described via splines (a spline patch). After trimming, the geometric description of the patch remains ...

We present a fundamental improvement of a high polynomial degree time domain cell method recently introduced by the last three authors. The published work introduced a method featuring block-diagonal system matrices where the block size and conditioning sc ...

A series of three formulations were prepared in view of experimental and theoretical investigation of their drug release potential. The morphology of the film formulations, in terms of distribution of drug into the polymeric matrix and the nature of the dr ...

An a posteriori error estimate is derived for the approximation of the transport equation with a time dependent transport velocity. Continuous, piecewise linear, anisotropic finite elements are used for space discretization, the Crank-Nicolson scheme schem ...

A series of four drug release formulations based on 5-fluorouracil encapsulated into a chitosan-based matrix were prepared by in situ hydrogelation with 3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadienal. The formulations were investigated from structural and morphological aspec ...

We present a loosely coupled scheme for the numerical simulation of the cardiac electrofluid-structure interaction problem, whose solution is typically computationally intensive due to the need to suitably treat the coupling of the different submodels. Our ...

We consider finite element error approximations of the steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations defined on a randomly perturbed domain, the perturbation being small. Introducing a random mapping, these equations are transformed into PDEs on a fixed re ...

Existing theoretical analyses of Faraday waves in Hele-Shaw cells rely on the Darcy approximation and assume a parabolic flow profile in the narrow direction. However, Darcy's model is known to be inaccurate when convective or unsteady inertial effects are ...

One of the major challenges of coupled problems is to manage nonconforming meshes at the interface between two models and/or domains, due to different numerical schemes or domain discretizations employed. Moreover, very often complex submodels depend on (e ...

The nonlocal nature of the fractional integral makes the numerical treatment of fractional dierential equations expensive in terms of computational eort and memory requirements. In this paper we propose a method to reduce these costs while controlling the ...

Neural networks provide an attractive framework to monitor the water table level and the volume of stored water in porous media from seismic data in an automated, fast and cost-efficient manner. In this work, a subsurface reservoir is modeled as a coupled ...

We discuss the multiscale modeling of a granular material trapped between continuum elastic domains. The amorphous granular region, usually termed “gouge,” is under high confinement pressure, to represent the loading of faults at depth. We model the granul ...

This thesis presents advancements in the understanding of the plasma conditions leading to the excitation and saturation of the Edge Harmonic Oscillations (EHOs) observed during QH-mode operation in tokamak plasmas. Such operations represent a safer altern ...

In this paper, a new formulation in the time domain of the Cooray-Rubinstein expression is presented. This new formulation overcomes the problems related to the previous formulation: The Dirac pulse contained in the kernel of the previous formulation is ex ...

Formulation of hydrophobic drugs as amorphous materials is highly advantageous as this increases their solubility in water and therefore their bioavailability. However, many drugs have a high propensity to crystallize during production and storage, limitin ...

In this paper, we consider the numerical approximation of high order Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) by means of NURBS-based Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) in the framework of the Galerkin method, for which global smooth basis functions with degree of c ...

In the wide literature devoted to the cardiac structural mechanics, the strain energy proposed by Holzapfel and Ogden exhibits a number of interesting features: it has suitable mathematical properties and it is based on few material parameters that can, in ...

This paper deals with the numerical approximation of the stationary two-dimensional Stokes equations, formulated in terms of vorticity, velocity and pressure, with non-standard boundary conditions. Here, by introducing a Galerkin least-squares term, we end ...
