JET, the only tokamak capable of operating with deuterium-–tritium (D-T) fuel (since TFTR was shutdown in 1999), has provided essential experimental data to support ITER and DEMO design and operation. Within the EUROfusion Tokamak Exploitation Work Package, JET completed its final campaigns (2022--2023), culminating in the third D-T campaign (DTE3). These experiments addressed key challenges in plasma scenarios, exhaust control, and tritium management under reactor-relevant conditions. Significant progress

Hydropower is a mature and cost-competitive renewable energy source and plays a central role in the European electricity system by providing flexibility, reserves, and grid stability. However, expanding hydropower generation capacity and operational capabilities is increasingly constrained by environmental regulations, competing water uses, and limited opportunities for new infrastructure development. This study explores the feasibility of deploying hydrokinetic turbines within tailrace channels downstream

Research on the Tokamak à Configuration Variable (TCV) addresses a wide range of key questions relevant to ITER and future fusion power plants. Over the past two years, highly productive experimental campaigns have led to major advances across several areas: the ITER baseline scenario; pedestal properties in low-collisionality, peeling-limited conditions; and the development of high-

Photovoltaic (PV) panels and wind turbines are key renewable energy technologies for carbon neutrality, yet their deployment relies on critical raw materials (CRMs). Existing criticality assessments predominantly emphasize 'external' dimensions, encompassing global and regional factors like production volumes, supply concentration, and geopolitical dependencies, while often overlooking country-specific or 'internal' dimensions, including national deployment trajectories, material demand growth, and recyclin

Negative triangularity (NT) is a promising ELM-free candidate for future fusion reactors. In this paper, the impact of increased divertor closure on density-ramp induced detachment in NT is assessed in the Tokamak `a Configuration Variable (TCV). Previous experiments in TCV have shown that at similar line-averaged density and divertor shape, NT shaping makes detachment access more difficult than in Positive Triangularity (PT) and results in a lower divertor neutral pressure. In this

This thesis focuses on the analysis and reproduction of integral experiments for validating stainless-steel nuclear data, through two complementary programs conducted in the CROCUS zero-power reactor at EPFL. These programs are the semi-integral PETALE program, which includes criticality and transmission experiments with heavy reflectors, and the hybrid pile-oscillation program BLOOM. Both belong to HARVEST X, an EPFL coordinated initiative to reproduce, extend, and cross-validate experiments for stainless-

The transition to carbon neutrality requires the adoption of renewable energy technologies such as photovoltaic solar panels and wind turbines. These technologies rely on Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) that play an essential role in enabling the energy transition. The criticality of these materials is shaped by two key dimensions: (i) external, encompassing global and regional factors like production volumes, supply concentration, and geopolitical dependencies, and (ii) internal, which relate to national pre

The EU climate neutrality target requires substantial changes in the energy system, and the transition toward deep decarbonisation might adversely affect economic activities. The proposal to implement the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) aims to support this transition by putting a fair price on the carbon emitted during the production of energy-intensive goods imported to the EU, boosting the competitiveness of the European industries. While the current analysis of the implementation of the CBAM f

Like other rich countries, Switzerland is using energy and material at a per-capita rate far above the world average, contributing to multiple crises of climate, biodiversity, pollution, and numerous factors of human wellbeing, especially health, inequality, and exclusion. Based on human needs scholarship and a series of stakeholder workshops we organized, here we explore to what extent shared spaces could not only reduce resource use, but as a synergistic satisfier, improve wellbeing at the same time. To

Estimation of the dynamic evolution of electron plasma density during a tokamak discharge is cru- cial since it directly affects the plasma performance, confinement and stability, therefore it needs to be monitored and controlled. Knowledge of the density profile can also be used to control in a more direct way the desired aspects of the plasma density, for example choosing to control the core, volume averaged or edge density, replacing control methods that rely e.g. on a single line-averaged electron densi

After its journey through space, sunlight arrives on Earth. In addition to illuminating and warming us, daylight plays a multitude of essential roles in our direct environment. Firstly, it is a powerful source of renewable energy whose potential is not yet fully exploited. While technology is constantly evolving to make the most of the sun’s energy, plants are experts in this and make optimal use of this energy to produce food. The second contribution in this session was dedicated to the role of daylight in

Drift-waves (DW) are low-frequency modes that arise in a magnetized plasma when a finite pressure gradient is present. In order to become unstable, DW require some form of dissipation, such as finite resistivity, electron inertia or wave-particle resonances. Despite significant development over the last decades, a numerically efficient model able to describe the DW instability at arbitrary collisionality regimes is still missing. This is particularly worrisome since the linear growth rate, together with the

Analysis and Design of Energy Geostructures gathers in a unified framework the theoretical and experimental competence available on energy geostructures: innovative multifunctional earth-contact structures that can provide renewable energy supply and structural support to any built environment. The book covers the broad, interdisciplinary and integrated knowledge required to address the analysis and design of energy geostructures from energy, geotechnical and structural perspectives. This knowledge includes

Gyrokinetic simulations are extensively used as a tool to describe various phenomena in magnetically confined plasmas. Among others, turbulent transport induced by drift-wave type instabilities such as Ion Temperature Gradient (ITG), Trapped Electron Mode (TEM) and Electron Temperature Gradient (ETG) plays a central role in fusion research. While the ITG mode in first approximations can be modeled using a reduced adiabatic electron model, the TEM and ETG modes require a kinetic description. The global delta

The Energy Efficiency Directive 2012/27/EU (EED) was released in October 2012 and transposed in June 2014 by Member States. The Directive requires large companies to carry out an energy audit before December 2015, which has to be repeated every 4 years. A possibility for companies to be exempted from regular energy audits is to be or become certified by an approved energy management system (EnMS), most likely the international standard ISO 50001. In both cases it means that companies have to set plans and d

Following the increased consciousness regarding global warming and other environmental issues, there is a growing urge in cities for a more rational energy supply and use in buildings. In parallel, the range of possible actions has broaden, from building refurbishment and construction options, through local energy production (solar panels, heat pumps) to the larger scale re-use of waste heat, green electricity production or trading. This evolution has increased the complexity of urban energy management, and

Recent advances in the suprathermal ion diagnostic in the basic plasma experiment TORPEX have inspired our comprehensive theoretical study of suprathermal ion transport. TORPEX, an example of a simple magnetized toroidal plasma (SMT), is equipped with a flexible fast ion source and detector capable of exploring fast ion dynamics in a wide range of positions and energies. We simulate an ensemble of ion tracer trajectories as specified by ideal interchange-mode turbulence imported from a validated numerical s

Turbulence and Transport Reduction with Negative Triangularity : Correlation ECE Measurements in TCV Due to turbulence, core energy transport in fusion devices such as tokamaks generally exceeds collisional transport by at least an order of magnitude. It is therefore crucial to understand the instabilities driving the turbulent state and to find ways to control them. Plasma shape is one of these fundamental tools. In low collisionality plasmas, such as in a reactor, changing the plasma shape from Dee-shape

The strategy document « Vision Energétique de la Suisse en 2050 », established by the Center for Energy Policy and Economics of Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETHZ), reveals the first impacts of climate change and underlines the fact, that the increasing energy consumption will influence the climate irreversibly in next few years and generate tremendous social, ecological and economic impacts. The only way to guarantee simultaneously the security of local energy supply as well as to protect the envi
