Microchannel plates are electron multipliers widely used in applications such as particle detection, imaging, or mass spectrometry and are often paired with a photocathode to enable photon detection. Conventional microchannel plates, made of glass fibers, ...

Traditionally, mass spectrometry (MS) output is the ion abundance plotted versus the ionic mass-to-charge ratio m/z. While employing only commercially available equipment, Charge Determination Analysis (CHARDA) adds a third dimension to MS, estimating for ...

Curcuminoids and their complexes continue to attract attention in medicinal chemistry, but little attention has been given to their metabolic derivatives. Here, the first examples of (arene)Ru(II) complexes with curcuminoid metabolites, tetrahydrocurcumin ...

The ionization of the residual gas in gyrotrons causes the generation of positively charged ions and negatively charged electrons. Using the electron optics code Ariadne, it was possible to simulate the behavior of these electrons in the overall gyrotron g ...

Proteins and lipids decorated with glycans are found throughout biological entities, playing roles in biological functions and dysfunctions. Current analytical strategies for these glycan-decorated biomolecules, termed glycoconjugates, rely on ensemble-ave ...

Solving native structures of such large molecules, like biomolecules, is often challenging, particularly due to the potentially infinite number of non-covalent interactions with water. In this thesis, we report the use of cold ion gas-phase action spectros ...

Permanent rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) cell lines represent potential in vitro alternatives to experiments with fish. We here developed a method to assess the bioaccumulation potential of anionic organic compounds in fish, using the rainbow trout li ...

More than two-thirds of cancer-related deaths are attributable to metastases. In some tumor types metastasis can occur up to 20 years after diagnosis and successful treatment of the primary tumor, a phenomenon termed late recurrence. Metastases arise from ...

Metastasis is the process by which cancer cells from the primary tumor travel through the blood stream to generate a secondary tumor site in a distant organ. Although very few cells are able to make this journey, the resulting effects are dire since most c ...

Glycans play an essential role in numerous physiological and pathological processes of living organisms. Despite their significant biological relevance, glycobiology remains one of the least explored fields of biochemistry. The intrinsic isomeric complexit ...

Introduction Biological fluids are routine samples for diagnostic testing and monitoring. Blood samples are typically measured because of their moderate invasive collection and high information content on health and disease. Several body fluids, such as ce ...

Stem and progenitor cells residing in the intestinal crypts drive the majority of colorectal cancers (CRCs), yet vascular contribution to this niche remains largely unexplored. Vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) is a key driver of physiological a ...

The characterization of biomolecules plays a central role in biomedical research. The development of state-of-the-art technologies is needed to make such analyses faster, more sensitive, and more accurate. While mass spectrometry continues to play a centra ...

Milk is a complex biological fluid composed mainly of water, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and diverse bioactive factors. Human milk represents a unique tailored source of nutrients that adapts during lactation to the specific needs of the developing in ...

The photoisomerization behavior of styryl 9M, a common dye used in material sciences, is investigated using tandem ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) coupled with laser spectroscopy. Styryl 9M has two alkene linkages, potentially allowing for four geometric i ...

Two pyrazole-based ligands bearing a pyridine moiety, 3-methyl-1-(pyridin-2-yl)-5-pyrazolone (HLpy), and 3methyl-1-(pyridin-2-yl)-4-trifluoroacetyl-5-pyrazolone (HQpy,CF3), were prepared and fully characterized in the solid-state and the tautomerism of bot ...

Routine Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) with ion detection at the unreduced (true) cyclotron frequency, instead of the reduced cyclotron frequency, has recently been demonstrated experimentally and supported computat ...

Metal emissions are of major environmental and practical concern because of their highly toxic effects on human health and ecosystems. Current technologies available in the market for their detection are typically limited by a time resolution of 1 h or lon ...

Infrared (IR) spectroscopy is a powerful tool used to infer detailed structural information on molecules, often in conjunction with quantum-chemical calculations. When applied to cryogenically cooled ions, IR spectra provide unique fingerprints that can be ...

Regio- and stereoselective nucleophilic attack of cyanide (from NBu4CN) to cationic diiron vinyliminium compounds [Fe2Cp2(CO)(mu-CO){mu-eta(1):eta(3)-C-(R')C(R '')-CNMe2}]CF3SO3 ([1a-f]CF3SO3) affords the nitrile-aminoallylidene derivatives 2a-f in good to ...
