The ever-increasing impact of deploying renewable energy resources reducing power system inertia, requires distributed energy resource (DER) aggregators to secure high-performance, fast-responding primary frequency reserve (PFR) in ancillary service market ...

To solve unmodeled optimization problems with hard constraints, this paper proposes a novel zeroth-order approach called Safe Zeroth-order Optimization using Linear Programs (SZO-LP). The SZO-LP method solves a linear program in each iteration to find a de ...

In this paper, we formulate a mixed integer linear program (MILP) for the simulated maximum likelihood estimation (MLSE) problem and devise a Benders decomposition approach to speed up the solution process. This framework can be applied to any advanced dis ...

We consider the problem of finding a saddle point for the convex-concave objective

\min_x \max_y f(x) + \langle Ax, y\rangle - g^*(y)

, where

f

is a convex function with locally Lipschitz gradient and

g

is convex and possibly non-smooth. We propose an ...

Load-bearing systems (structures) in buildings and infrastructure contribute to a significant share of adverse environmental impacts (EI) because of resource- and energy-intensive fabrication. A currently overlooked circular economy strategy to reduce EI i ...

This research presents a mathematical formulation for optimizing integration of complex industrial systems from the level of unit operations to processes, entire plants, and finally to considering industrial symbiosis opportunities between plants. The fram ...

This paper presents a new model of voltage source converter (VSC)-based battery energy storage systems (BESSs) that interface with power grids. A VSC-based BESS is made up of a series connection of a VSC, its connecting transformer and a BESS. The VSC allo ...

The flexibility of distributed energy resources (DERs) accommodated in active distribution networks (ADNs) can be aggregated and then used to provide ancillary services to the transmission system. In this context, this paper presents a linear optimization ...

An alternative approach for real-time network-wide traffic control in cities that has recently gained a lot of interest is perimeter flow control. The basic concept of such an approach is to partition heterogeneous cities into a small number of homogeneous ...

With the ever-growing data sizes along with the increasing complexity of the modern problem formulations, contemporary applications in science and engineering impose heavy computational and storage burdens on the optimization algorithms. As a result, there ...

This study evaluates the potential of supervised and transfer learning techniques to assist energy system optimization. A surrogate model is developed with the support of a supervised learning technique (by using artificial neural network) in order to bypa ...

The large potential for waste resource and heat recovery in industry has been motivating research toward increasing efficiency. Process integration methods have proven to be effective tools in improving industrial sites while decreasing their resource and ...

Recent advances in material science and digital fabrication provide promising opportunities for product design, mechanical and biomedical engineering, robotics, architecture, art, and science. Engineered materials and personalized fabrication are revolutio ...

Initially developed for the min-knapsack problem, the knapsack cover inequalities are used in the current best relaxations for numerous combinatorial optimization problems of covering type. In spite of their widespread use, these inequalities yield linear ...

Integer programs (IPs) are one of the fundamental tools used to solve combinatorial problems in theory and practice. Understanding the structure of solutions of IPs is thus helpful to argue about the existence of solutions with a certain simple structure, ...

This paper presents an optimization of a virtual cathode oscillator (Vircator) with axial extraction using a novel evolutionary algorithm (EA) thought to reduce the number of evaluations. The EA was tested on a Vircator optimization with two objective func ...

We consider the Node-weighted Steiner Forest problem on planar graphs. Demaine et al. showed that a generic primal-dual algorithm gives a 6-approximation. We present two different proofs of an approximation factor of~

. Then, we draw a connection to Goem ...

A new method for the design of fixed-order dynamic output-feedback Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) controllers for discrete-time LPV systems with bounded scheduling parameter variations is presented in this paper. Sufficient conditions for the stability, H2 ...

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners produce raw measurements that are unfit to direct interpretation, unless an algorithmic step, called reconstruction, is introduced. Up to the last decade, this reconstruction was performed by algorithms of moderate ...

Explicit Model Predictive Control (EMPC) produces control laws defined over a set of polytopic regions in the state space. In this paper we present a method to create a binary search tree for point location in such polytopic sets, in order to provide a fas ...
