We demonstrate an erbium-doped waveguide amplifier by erbium ion implantation in Si3N4 photonic integrated circuits, achieving 145 mW on-chip output power and more than 30 dB small-signal gain, which is on par with commercial fiber amplifiers and beyond st ...

Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers revolutionized long-haul optical communications and laser technology. Erbium ions could provide a basis for efficient optical amplification in photonic integrated circuits but their use remains impractical as a result of insuf ...

The synthesis of ultralow-noise microwaves is of both scientific and technological relevance for timing, metrology, communications and radio-astronomy. Today, the lowest reported phase noise signals are obtained via optical frequency-division using mode-lo ...

We look beyond the standard time-average approach and investigate optical forces in the time domain. The formalism is developed for both the Abraham and Minkowski momenta, which appear to converge in the time domain. We unveil an extremely rich - and by fa ...

Nonlinear wave mixing in optical microresonators new perospects for compact optical frequency combs with many promising applications. We demonstrate simultaneous generation of multiple frequency combs from a single optical microresonator and a single conti ...

Photonic integrated systems can be harnessed for fast and efficient optical telecommunication and metrology technologies. Here the authors develop a dual-soliton microcomb technique for massively parallel coherent laser ranging that requires only a single ...

An application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) named ANTIGONE (ANalog To dIGital cONvErter) was designed in AMS 0.35 mu m technology to interface with four Ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (ISFET) sensors and perform real-time monitoring of some bi ...

Planar microstrip resonators suitable for material characterization application are presented in this paper. The prototype consists of three resonators fed through four ports in a planar dielectric substrate without any additional resonators. The resonator ...

Typically, a time-of-flight (TOF) positron emission tomography (PET) block detector is built using application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), since they integrate a high number of channels at a reasonable power consumption and into a small area. How ...

The optical characterization of metasurfaces and nanostructures that alter the polarization of light is tricky and can lead to unphysical results, such as reflectance beyond unity. We track the origin of such pitfalls to the response of some typical optica ...

A tunable and reconfigurable optical Nyquist channels aggregation is experimentally demonstrated. The proposed method two aggregate lower order modulation formats into a single higher order one. Two 16 Gbaud QPSK Nyquist pulses aggregated to a 16 QAM Nyqui ...

Traditional sampling involves encoding a signal through (time, value)-pairs. In contrast, time encoding machines (TEMs) characterize a signal by recording time points which depend on the integral of the signal over time. We study multi-channel TEMs where c ...

To achieve resource-efficient hardware designs, HLS tools share (i.e., time-multiplex) functional units among operations of the same type. This optimization is typically performed together with operation scheduling to ensure the best possible unit usage at ...

Dual-comb interferometry utilizes two optical frequency combs to map the optical field's spectrum to a radio-frequency signal without using moving parts, allowing improved speed and accuracy. However, the method is compounded by the complexity and demandin ...

Photonic add-drop filters are crucial components for the implementation of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) in fiber-optic communication systems. The recent progress in photonic integration has shown the potential to integrate photonic add-drop filte ...

Cylindrical light diffusers (CLDs) are often employed for the treatment of large tumors by interstitial photodynamic therapy (iPDT) and photoimmunotherapy (PIT), which involves careful treatment planning to maximize therapeutic dose coverage while minimizi ...

High-quality 3D ultrasound (US) imaging requires dense matrix-array probes with thousands of elements and necessitates an unrealistic number of coaxial cables to connect such probes to back-end systems. To address this issue, many techniques have been deve ...

The ability to amplify optical signals is of pivotal importance across science and technology typically using rare-earth-doped fibres or gain media based on III-V semiconductors. A different physical process to amplify optical signals is to use the Kerr no ...

Solitons are waveforms that preserve their shape while propagating, as a result of a balance of dispersion and nonlinearity(1,2). Soliton-based data transmission schemes were investigated in the 1980s and showed promise as a way of overcoming the limitatio ...

A time-division multiplexing (TDM) digital channel coding scheme for wireline multi-drop interfaces has been proposed. Shaping the TX spectrum to avoid channel frequency notches, the proposed digital TDM signaling reduces inter-symbol interference (ISI) an ...
