DiffUrb is an interdisciplinary research collaboration aiming at describing and understanding how urban differences in terms of diverse population groups are dealt with across five European cities: Geneva, Brussels, Hamburg, Turin, and Zurich. To this end, ...

Machine learning and artificial intelligence methods have achieved remarkable success, matching and even surpassing human capabilities in various complex tasks. However, many demonstrations have generally neglected a critical part of the intelligence that ...

Supervised and unsupervised kernel-based algorithms widely used in the physical sciences depend upon the notion of similarity. Their reliance on pre-defined distance metrics-e.g. the Euclidean or Manhattan distance-are problematic especially when used in c ...

Can living near a national border have an effect on the politicization of individuals? To answer this question, this article challenges the results put forward by some European Border Studies scholars granting the border a major role in the construction of ...

Under the umbrella of smart toys, a myriad of interactive systems have addressed a variety of scenarios considering entertainment, education, sustainability, social and environmental learning through play. Tangibles and small toy robots prevail; but intera ...

Through the years, mineralogical studies have produced a tremendous amount of data on the atomic arrangement and mineral properties. Quite often, structural analysis has led to elucidate the role played by minor components, giving interesting insights into ...

Algebraic network information theory is an emerging facet of network information theory, studying the achievable rates of random code ensembles that have algebraic structure, such as random linear codes. A distinguishing feature is that linear combinations ...

BookTubers are a rapidly growing community in YouTube who shares content related to books. Previous literature has addressed problems related to automatically analyzing opinions and mood of video logs (vlogs) as a generic category in YouTube. Unfortunately ...

In this work, we propose a new, fast and scalable method for anomaly detection in large time-evolving graphs. It may be a static graph with dynamic node attributes (e.g. time-series), or a graph evolving in time, such as a temporal network. We define an an ...

This thesis is devoted to information-theoretic aspects of community detection. The importance of community detection is due to the massive amount of scientific data today that describes relationships between items from a network, e.g., a social network. I ...

Feature selection problems arise in a variety of applications, such as microarray analysis, clinical prediction, text categorization, image classification and face recognition, multi-label learning, and classification of internet traffic. Among the various ...

Defining and identifying duplicate records in a dataset is a challenging task which grows more complex when the modeled entities themselves are hard to delineate. In the geospatial domain, it may not be clear where a mountain, stream, or valley ends and be ...

The increasing amount of data collected in online learning environments provides unique opportunities to better understand the learning processes in different educational settings. Learning analytics research aims at understanding and optimizing learning a ...

Subgraph counting is a fundamental primitive in graph processing, with applications in social network analysis (e.g., estimating the clustering coefficient of a graph), database processing and other areas. The space complexity of subgraph counting has been ...

In the first part of this thesis, we present and compare several approaches for the determination of the steady-state of large-scale Markov chains with an underlying low-rank tensor structure. Such structure is, in our context of interest, associated with ...

In this integrated study of dynamics in MOOCs discussion forums, we analyze the interplay of temporal patterns, discussion content, and the social structure emerging from the communication using mixed methods. A special focus is on the yet under-explored a ...

We derive rigorous asymptotic results for the magnitude of contagion in a large counterparty network and give an analytical expression for the asymptotic fraction of defaults, in terms of network characteristics. Our results extend previous studies on cont ...

First impressions play a critical role in the hospitality industry and have been shown to be closely linked to the behavior of the person being judged. In this work, we implemented a behavioral training framework for hospitality students with the goal of i ...

In this paper, we address the problem of scientific-social network integration to find a matching relationship between members of these networks (i.e. The DBLP publication network and the Twitter social network). This task is a crucial step toward building ...

The advent of online social networks created new prediction opportunities for recommender systems: instead of relying on past rating history through the use of collaborative filtering (CF), they can leverage the social relations among users as a predictor ...
