In this study, TC-PRISMA was employed to simulate the precipitation (number density and radius) of an FeMnSi-based shape memory alloy (FeMnSi-SMA), with a chemical composition of Fe-17Mn-5Si-10Cr-4Ni-1(V, C) (wt%), during one-step and two-step aging proces ...

The present study investigates the microstructural evolution, tribological properties, and corrosion behavior of hybrid metal matrix composites reinforced by a combination of graphite (Gr) and zirconia (ZrO2) particles fabricated by Friction Stir Processin ...

In this study, a facile chemical approach was utilized to successfully fabricate a porous bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3, BFO)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanocomposite thin film as a photoanode for photoelec-trochemical (PEC) water splitting. The BFO nanopartic ...

In this study, a sol-gel process is used to synthesize a bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3, or BFO for short)/ reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanocomposite (BGO). The structural, morphological, and op-tical characteristics of the BiFeO3 nanopowder are modified by cont ...

While lean Mg-Zn-Ca alloys are promising materials for temporary implants, questions remain on the impact of Zn and Ca on the microstructure. In this context, the precipitation of Zn and Ca in Mg-1.5Zn-0.25Ca (in wt.%), initially extruded at 330 & DEG;C, t ...

Hydrogen embrittlement (HE) is a ubiquitous and catastrophic mode of fracture in metals. Here, embrittlement is considered as an intrinsic ductile-brittle transition at the crack tip, where H at the crack tip can reduce the stress intensity K-Ic for cleava ...

The yield strength of random metal alloys, i.e. alloys with random occupation of the crystalline lattice sites by the elemental constituent atoms all considered as solutes, is primarily understood as controlled by solute/dislocation interactions. Solute-so ...

Plasma nitriding was applied to ferritic stainless steel substrates to improve their performances as interconnects for solid oxide fuel cell devices. The samples underwent electrical conductivity test and SEM/EDS, TEM/EDS, environmental-SEM analyses. The f ...

Phase transitions in AuCu alloy are investigated using in situ temperature XRD and mechanical spectroscopy. The measurements are carried out from room temperature up to 973 K starting from the ordered phase AuCuI. Using a temperature ramp rate of 1 K/min, ...

A modification to the empirical Olson-Cohen strain-induced austenite to martensite transformation kinetic model is proposed. The proposed kinetic model accounts for the stress state at the grain level and the crystallography of the transformation mechanism ...

Based on detailed EBSD analyses, Kurtuldu et al. (Acta Mater. 70:240-248, 2014) have explained the grain refinement of Au-12.5 wt pctCu-12.5 wt pctAg (yellow gold) by the addition of minute amounts of Ir in terms of icosahedral quasicrystal (iQC)-mediated ...

Despite increasing attention for the recently found ferro- and antiferroelectric properties, the polymorphism in hafnia- and zirconia-based thin films is still not sufficiently understood. In the present work, we show that it is important to have a good qu ...

Surfaces engineering on titanium biomedical alloys aiming for improving bone regeneration, healing periods and increasing lifetime needs fora fundamental understanding of the electrochemical reactions occurring at the interface biomaterial/human fluid. The ...

Nanopowders are continuously under investigation as they open new perspectives in numerous fields. There are two main challenges to stimulating their development: sufficient low-cost, high throughput synthesis methods which lead to a production with well-d ...

Transparent alumina is often processed with sintering additives such as, Y, La, and Mg, in order to limit its grain growth at high sintering temperatures. Usually, these additives segregate to the grain boundaries due to their larger cationic size than Al ...

The influence of concurrent precipitation on recrystallization is analyzed by comparing the nucleation and growth behavior of P ({011} 〈566〉), Cube ({001} 〈100〉), and 20 deg ND-rotated Cube ({001} 〈310〉, NDcube)-oriented grains in Al-xMn-Fe-Si (x = 0, 0.4, ...

In microelectronics applications, SnAgCu lead-free solder joints play the important role of ensuring both the mechanical and electrical integrity of the components. In such applications, the SnAgCu joints are subjected to elevated homologous temperatures f ...

The paper by Karma and Tourret (this volume) in this special issue focuses on multiscale modeling approaches ranging from atoms to microstructure. In the present one, the most recent and significant modeling contributions dealing with the scale of solidifi ...

Hot tearing is a major defect of solidification processes and welding. It occurs in metallic alloys while they are in the semi-solid state and is caused by a lack of liquid feeding in the mushy zone to compensate solid network openings due to tensile and s ...

Due to the high homologous temperature and fast cooling rates, the microstructures of SnAgCu (SAC) solders are in a meta-stable state in most applications, which is the cause of significant microstructural evolution and continuous variation in the mechanic ...
