We present uniformly measured stellar metallicities of 463 stars in 13 Milky Way (MW) ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (UFDs; M-V = -7.1 to -0.8) using narrowband CaHK (F395N) imaging taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. This represents the largest homogeneous ...

Perioptic meningiomas, defined as those that are less than 3 mm from the optic apparatus, are challenging to treat with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). Tumor control must be weighed against the risk of radiation-induced optic neuropathy (RION), as both tu ...

This article shows that the inability to use monetary policy for macroeconomic stabilization leaves a government more vulnerable to a rollover crisis. We study a sovereign default model with self-fulfilling rollover crises, foreign currency debt, and nomin ...

Urban air quality is a major concern in the context of human health since cities are at the same time emission hot spots and home to a large fraction of the world's population. Airborne imaging spectrometers may be a valuable addition to traditional air po ...

SARS-CoV-2 infected a large fraction of humans in the past 2 years. The clinical presentation of acute infection varies greatly between individuals, ranging from asymptomatic or mild to life-threatening COVID-19 pneumonia with multi-organ complications. De ...

The remoteness and extreme conditions of the Arctic make it a very difficult environment to investigate. In these polar regions covered by sea ice, the wind is relatively strong due to the absence of obstructions and redistributes a large part of the depos ...

Medipix4 is the latest member in the Medipix/Timepix family of pixel detector chips aimed at high rate spectroscopic X-ray imaging using high-Z materials. The chip address the limitations of conventional hybrid pixel detectors for X-ray imaging. Its predec ...

This thesis consists of two chapters that study separate subjects in the area of corporate finance. The first chapter, titled â Economic Gains in Bank Mergers and Acquisitions â Evidence from Targetsâ , investigates economic gains in bank mergers and ...

The present invention proposes a method for detecting anomalous or out-of-distribution images in a machine learning system (1) comprising a pre-training network with a first encoder, and an anomaly detection network with a second encoder. The system is fir ...

We offer the first security analysis of cache compression, a promising architectural technique that is likely to appear in future mainstream processors. We find that cache compression has novel security implications because the compressibility of a cache l ...

Vertebrate genomes are partitioned into contact domains defined by enhanced internal contact frequency and formed by two principal mechanisms: compartmentalization of transcriptionally active and inactive domains, and stalling of chromosomal loop-extruding ...

The present doctoral thesis aimed to achieve a robust cultivation of microalgae by recycling nitrogen from a liquid digestate. However, the use of non-sterile nutrient source increases the risks of contamination of undesired organisms such as bacteria, vir ...

The remoteness and extreme conditions of the Arctic make it a very difficult environment to investigate. In these regions, the wind has a substantial effect and redistributes a large part of the snow, which complicates precipitation estimates. Moreover, th ...

Context. Globular clusters (GCs) host multiple populations of stars that are well-separated in a photometric diagram - the chromosome map - built from specific Hubble Space Telescope (HST) filters. Stars from different populations feature at various locati ...

We use Gaia DR2 astrometric and photometric data, published radial velocities and MESA models to infer distances, orbits, surface gravities, and effective temperatures for all ultra metal-poor stars ([Fe/H] < -4.0 dex) available in the literature. Assuming ...

Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) to multi-carbon products such as ethylene, ethanol and n-propanol offers a promising path for utilization of excessive CO2 and energy storage. Oxide-derived Cu electrodes are among the best electrocatalysts ...

The aim of this thesis is to understand the mechanisms underlying the main hydration peak and later ages of alite hydration; it proposes new mechanistic models for these two stages. Alite is the main constituent of Portland Cement (PC), and is responsible ...

This thesis develops three models that study the motivation of various agents to take on debt, and the impact that excessive financial leverage can have on social welfare. In the chapter "Short-term Bank Leverage and the Value of Liquid Reserves", the ince ...

Quasilocalized modes appear in the vibrational spectrum of amorphous solids at low frequency. Though never formalized, these modes are believed to have a close relationship with other important local excitations, including shear transformations and two-lev ...

Brain accumulation and aggregation of amyloid- (A) peptides is a critical step in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Full-length A peptides (mainly A1-40 and A1-42) are produced through sequential proteolytic cleavage of the amyloid precursor pr ...
