The integration of 2D materials with optical fibers enables multifunctional fiber devices, such as polarizers, modulators, and sensors. Recent advances in direct vapor deposition growth further enhance light‐2D material interactions to centimeter‐scale len ...

For the EU DEMO conductor testing, a temperature sensor based on Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) optical fiber is studied at the EPFL Swiss Plasma Center. The SULTAN test facility has been upgraded to use fiber optic sensor for temperature monitoring and quench ...

This paper proposes and experimentally validates a distributed temperature alarm system based on carbon dioxide (CO2)-filled 18 m side air-holes fiber (SAHF), interrogated through a conventional (incoherent) optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR). Custom ...

The increasing challenges caused by the growing and aging population and the fast pace of life are calling for a change of our current medical care system towards being rapid, easy, and on-demand self-care. Empowerment with the self-caring components such ...

We demonstrate an erbium-doped waveguide amplifier by erbium ion implantation in Si3N4 photonic integrated circuits, achieving 145 mW on-chip output power and more than 30 dB small-signal gain, which is on par with commercial fiber amplifiers and beyond st ...

Programmable photonics promise a plethora of optical functions while at the same time reducing the time and costs of photonic integrated circuit (PIC) development. One primary bottleneck for development of these systems is the difficulty in increasing comp ...

It has been shown analytically that Peregrine solitons emerge locally from a universal mechanism in the so-called semiclassical limit of the one-dimensional focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Experimentally, this limit corresponds to the strongly non ...

Time-energy entangled photon pairs are fundamental resources for quantum communication protocols since they are robust against environmental fluctuations in optical fiber networks. Pair sources based on spontaneous four-wave mixing in silicon microring res ...

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner technology requires the use of a large number of PET detector modules that work in a parallel and synchronous manner. Moreover, system modularity is a desirable feature, that enables technology reutilization for d ...

Scanning Near-field Optical Microscopy (SNOM) technique enables to overcome Abbe diffraction limit of far-field optics as well as to obtain simultaneously optical and topographical images. While the optical resolution of the method is limited by the apertu ...

Linear and nonlinear two-dimensional image processing approaches are analyzed with the aim of removing noise from data acquired by distributed optical fiber sensors based on Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA). The impact of the filter parameter ...

A spider uses up to seven different types of silk, all having specific functions, as building material, weapon and sensory organ to detect the presence of preys on its web. Recently, scientists have put under the limelight the extraordinary properties of t ...

In this work, we report on the first demonstration of Lab on Fiber (LOF) dosimeter for ionizing radiation monitoring at ultra-high doses. The new dosimeter consists in a metallo-dielectric resonator at subwavelength scale supporting localized surface plasm ...

A frequency-domain method is proposed to measure the inertial response of forward stimulated Brillouin scattering, so that the acoustic impedance of a liquid medium outside an uncoated 30 m standard single-mode fibre can be sensed. The proposed technique o ...

A method based on coherent Rayleigh scattering distinctly evaluating temperature and strain is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for distributed optical fiber sensing. Combining conventional phase-sensitive optical time-domain domain reflectometry ( ...

One of the big research topics in modern cosmology is the mystery of dark Energy. To unveil the secret, cosmologists want to measure precisely the evolution of large scale structures in the universe. One way of doing so is to measure the 3D location of a h ...

Modulation instability (MI) as the main limit to the sensing distance of distributed fiber sensors is thoroughly investigated in this thesis in order to obtain a model for predicting its characteristics and alleviating its effects. Starting from Maxwell's ...

We present near diffraction limited two photon fluorescence (TPF) imaging through a lensless, multi-core fiber (MCF) endoscope utilizing digital phase conjugation. The ultra-small size of MCFs make them desirable tools for imaging deep into the body. TPF i ...

We propose a technique to localize computation in Instruction Set Extensions (ISEs) that are clocked at very high speed with respect to the processor. In order to save power, data to and from Custom Instruction Units (CIUs) is synchronized via an optical s ...

We demonstrate the construction of corrugated waveguides using stacked rings to propagate terahertz frequencies. The waveguide allows propagation of the same fundamental mode as an optical-fiber, namely, the HE11 mode. This simple concept opens the way for ...
