Vision systems built around conventional image sensors have to read, encode and transmit large quantities of pixel information, a majority of which is redundant. As a result, new computational imaging sensor architectures were developed to preprocess the r ...

Reconstructing lens potentials and lensed sources can easily become an underconstrained problem, even when the degrees of freedom are low, due to degeneracies, particularly when potential perturbations superimposed on a smooth lens are included. Regulariza ...

We provide an introduction to Gaussian process regression (GPR) machinelearning methods in computational materials science and chemistry. The focus of the present review is on the regression of atomistic properties: in particular, on the construction of in ...

Maximum-Entropy Distributions offer an attractive family of probability densities suitable for moment closure problems. Yet finding the Lagrange multipliers which parametrize these distributions, turns out to be a computational bottleneck for practical clo ...

We consider the robust linear regression problem in the online setting where we have access to the data in a streaming manner, one data point after the other. More specifically, for a true parameter , we consider the corrupted Gaussian linear model $ y=\la ...

Random binning features, introduced in the seminal paper of Rahimi and Recht '07, are an efficient method for approximating a kernel matrix using locality sensitive hashing. Random binning features provide a very simple and efficient way to approximate the ...

We derive a covariance formula for the class of 'topological events' of smooth Gaussian fields on manifolds; these are events that depend only on the topology of the level sets of the field, for example, (i) crossing events for level or excursion sets, (ii ...

The necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of a generalized representer theorem are presented for learning Hilbert space - valued functions. Representer theorems involving explicit basis functions and Reproducing Kernels are a common occurrence ...

In solid mechanics, linear structures often exhibit (local) nonlinear behavior when close to failure. For instance, the elastic deformation of a structure becomes plastic after being deformed beyond recovery. To properly assess such problems in a real-life ...

A non-intrusive reduced basis (RB) method is proposed for parametrized nonlinear structural analysis undergoing large deformations and with elasto-plastic constitutive relations. In this method, a reduced basis is constructed from a set of full-order snaps ...

Despite recent advances in prosthetics and assistive robotics in general, robust simultaneous and proportional control of dexterous prosthetic devices remains an unsolved problem, mainly because of inadequate sensorization. In this paper, we study the appl ...

Gaze is an important non-verbal cue involved in many facets of social interactions like communication, attentiveness or attitudes. Nevertheless, extracting gaze directions visually and remotely usually suffers large errors because of low resolution images, ...

Despite recent developments, neighborhood-scale performance assessment at the early-design phase is seldom carried out in practice, notably due to high computational complexity, time requirement, and perceived need for expert knowledge, ultimately limiting ...

In this paper, we address the problem of retrieving soil moisture over a grassland alpine area from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data using a statistical algorithm trained by simulations of a physical model. A time series of C-band VV-polarized Wide Swat ...

Building simulation requires a large number of uncertain inputs and parameters. These include quantities that may be known with reasonable confidence, like the thermal properties of materials and building dimensions, but also inputs whose correct values ca ...

The development of systems able to retrieve and characterise the state of humans is important for many applications and fields of study. In particular, as a display of attention and interest, gaze is a fundamental cue in understanding people activities, be ...

We introduce an adaptive continuous-domain modeling approach to texture and natural images. The continuous-domain image is assumed to be a smooth function, and we embed it in a parameterized Sobolev space. We point out a link between Sobolev spaces and sto ...

Presented is an accurate swimming velocity estimation method using an inertial measurement unit (IMU) by employing a simple biomechanical constraint of motion along with Gaussian process regression to deal with sensor inherent errors. Experimental validati ...

Bayesian estimation problems involving Gaussian distributions often result in linear estimation techniques. Nevertheless, there are no general statements as to whether the linearity of the Bayesian estimator is restricted to the Gaussian case. The two comm ...
