It is well-established that symptomatic cancers evade immune destruction by coalescing tumor microenvironments to suppress adaptive immunity. Additionally, mouse models of cervical and other cancers have revealed a capability of tumors to systemically indu ...

Hematopoietic Stem and Progenitor Cells (HSPCs) reside in their niche, a structure that regulates the balance of cellular quiescence, self-renewal and commitment towards differentiated cells. This highly plastic niche is formed by several cellular players, ...

In many leukemia patients, a poor prognosis is attributed either to the development of chemotherapy resistance by leukemic stem cells (LSCs) or to the inefficient engraftment of transplanted hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) into the bone marrow ...

NOTCH1 is a well-established lineage specifier for T cells and among the most frequently mutated genes throughout all subclasses of T cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). How oncogenic NOTCH1 signaling launches a leukemia-prone chromatin landscape du ...

Purpose: Here we review the current knowledge on bone marrow adipocytes (BMAds) as active contributors to the regulation of the hematopoietic niche, and as potentially pivotal players in the progression of hematological malignancies. We highlight the hiera ...

Over the last two decades, increased interest of scientists to study bone marrow adiposity (BMA) in relation to bone and adipose tissue physiology has expanded the number of publications using different sources of bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT). However ...

Bone marrow (BM) organoids provide powerful tools to study the vital interplay between the BM microenvironment and resident cells. Current biomaterials, however, are limited in terms of versatility for independently studying the biochemical and biophysical ...

Background Estrogen receptor alpha (ER alpha) signaling is a defining and driving event in most breast cancers; ER alpha is detected in malignant epithelial cells of 75% of all breast cancers (classified as ER-positive breast cancer) and, in these cases, E ...

Stem cells reside in complex niches in which their behaviour is tightly regulated by various biochemical and biophysical signals. In order to unveil some of the crucial stem cell-niche interactions and expedite the implementation of stem cells in clinical ...

The Mesenchymal Stem Cell (MSC) is a self-renewing multipotent progenitor originally found in the bone marrow. It has drawn strong interest from translational research because of the multipotency of MSCs, their immunosuppression, their intrinsic homing and ...

The Notch signaling cascade is a well conserved pathway that regulates many aspects of embryonic development and plays a crucial role in the differentiation process and tissue homeostasis in multiple organs of adult species. Several human pathological diso ...

Leptin is a pleiotropic hormone proposed to link nutritional status to the development of strong Th1 immunity. Because Mycobacterium tuberculosis control is affected by starvation and diabetes, we studied the role of the leptin receptor in regulating disti ...

We describe herein some immunological properties of human fetal bone cells recently tested for bone tissue engineering applications. Adult mesenchymal stem cells and adult osteoblasts were included in the study for comparison. Surface markers involved in b ...

Myc activity is emerging as a key element in acquisition and maintenance of stem cell properties. We have previously shown that c-Myc deficiency results in accumulation of defective hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) due to niche-dependent differentiation def ...

Adult stem cells represent only a minor proportion of a given tissue and are difficult to amplify in vitro without affecting their biological properties. To circumvent this problem, we used a transgenic/lentiviral based approach to isolate and characterize ...

Bone marrow-derived cells include haematopoietic cell lineages and the recently described endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). It has been recently emphasised that these marrow-derived cells contribute to tumour angiogenesis, and different mechanisms have ...
