Understanding the corrosion behavior of biomedical materials in the human body is an essential step for the development of improved materials and clinical procedures in arthroplasty. In this work, the corrosion behavior of Ti and CoCrMo alloys in human syn ...

With the development of modern medical techniques, the application of orthopedic implants has been continually increasing in recent years. Passive materials, such as Ti and its alloys as well as CoCrMo alloys, are widely used in artificial joints due to th ...

Coating nano particles and other substrates for efficiency enhancement, protection and obtaining new atomic structures is a widespread research topic in catalysis and material synthesis. Thus far, different approaches of coating, ranging from simplest to s ...

Semiaromatic polyamides are used for metal replacementin advancedengineering applications to reduce weight and improve efficiency, but their range of application is limited by their inherent lack ofductility and toughness. Here, we combined semiaromatic pol ...

Glenohumeral osteoarthritis is a degenerative shoulder joint disease, which causes the breakdown of articular cartilage and bone. People affected by this disease suffer from severe pain and eventually reduced mobility and poor life quality. This disease is ...

Ternary-based titanium nitride (TiN) thin films have drawn attention toward rational applications due to their wear resistance, high hardness, and corrosion resistance. The influence of Mo content on the structural, tribo-logical, and mechanical properties ...

The introduction of modular design in total hip arthroplasty has enabled the use of different materials in one single configuration and the adjustment of the prosthesis to the patient's body, and facilitated medical revisions. However, modularity leads to ...

Application of a single metal or alloy is often restricted by its properties from optimal combination of performance and cost. Therefore, there is a vast need of joining dissimilar metals for various applications in biomedical, aerospace, automobile and ma ...

Modular hip joint implants were introduced in arthroplasty medical procedures because they facilitate the tailoring of patients’ anatomy, the use of different materials in one single configuration, as well as medical revision. However, in certain cases, su ...

Sterilization is a prerequisite for biomedical devices before contacting the human body. It guarantees the lack of infection by eliminating microorganisms (i.e., bacteria, spores and fungi). It constitutes the last fabrication process of a biomedical devic ...

BackgroundTotal knee arthroplasty (TKA) is most frequently planned using conventional two-dimensional weight-bearing lower limb radiographs and is performed with conventional femoral and tibial cutting guides. Questions have been raised about the accuracy ...

The limitations and potential complications correlated with autogenous bone grafts have raised interest in the development of synthetic bone graft substitutes. ß-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP) is one of the most promising materials for synthetic bone graft s ...

The drive to develop cartilage implants for the treatment of major defects in the musculoskeletal sys-tem has resulted in a major research thrust towards developing biomaterial devices for cartilage repair. Investigational devices for the restoration of ar ...

A mechanistic understanding of bone fracture is indispensable for developing improved fracture risk assessment in clinics. Since bone is a hierarchically structured material, gaining such knowledge requires analysis at multiple length scales. Here, the ten ...

Hydrogels are among the first materials expressly designed for their use in biomedicine. However, state-of-the-art applications of hydrogels are severely limited because they are typically either too soft or too brittle such that they cannot bear significa ...

The brain is an ultra-soft viscoelastic matrix. Sub-kPa hydrogels match the brain's mechanical properties but are challenging to manipulate in an implantable format. We propose a simple fabrication and processing sequence, consisting of de-hydration, patte ...

Tribocorrosion of passivating metals is a dynamic phenomenon causing degradation of materials by a combination of mechanical wear and electrochemical dissolution. The mechanical action typically produces a local removal of particles, metal as well as oxide ...

Silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells have recently reached power conversion efficiencies above 25% with various device architectures and with industrial size (>200 cm(2)) wafers. Yet, for an accurate assessment of the efficiency potential and further d ...

Jet injection devices have been studied and developed for transdermal drug delivery to avoid the use of needles. Such contact-less devices provide several advantages such as better dose control, lateral and depth localisation, lower collateral damage than ...

The outstanding physico-chemical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) applied to rectify the problems in bone tissue engineering through enhancing cell proliferation, adhesion and viability, which lead to the improvement in bone replacement, growth and he ...
