Human babies have a natural desire to interact with new toys and objects, through which they learn how the world around them works, e.g., that glass shatters when dropped, but a rubber ball does not. When their predictions are proven incorrect, such as whe ...

We face a rigidity problem for the fractional p-Laplace operator to extend to this new framework some tools useful for the linear case. It is known that (-Delta)(s)(1 - vertical bar x vertical bar(2))(+)(s) and -Delta(p)(1 - vertical bar x vertical bar(p/p ...

By operating with the Scale Relativity Theory in the dynamics of complex systems, we can achieve a description of these complex systems through a holographic-type perspective. Then, gauge invariances of a Riccati-type become functional in complex system dy ...

Is it possible to detect if the sample paths of a stochastic process almost surely admit a finite expansion with respect to some/any basis? The determination is to be made on the basis of a finite collection of discretely/noisily observed sample paths. We ...

Recently, we have established and used the generalized Littlewood theorem concerning contour integrals of the logarithm of analytical function to obtain new criteria equivalent to the Riemann hypothesis. Later, the same theorem was applied to calculate cer ...

This work is concerned with computing low-rank approximations of a matrix function f(A) for a large symmetric positive semidefinite matrix A, a task that arises in, e.g., statistical learning and inverse problems. The application of popular randomized meth ...

The Schur decomposition of a square matrix A is an important intermediate step of state-of-the-art numerical algorithms for addressing eigenvalue problems, matrix functions, and matrix equations. This work is concerned with the following task: Compute a (m ...

The eigenspectrum of the Koopman operator enables the decomposition of nonlinear dynamics into a sum of nonlinear functions of the state space with purely exponential and sinusoidal time dependence. For a limited number of dynamical systems, it is possible ...

Fourier ptychography (FP) involves the acquisition of several low-resolution intensity images of a sample under varying illumination angles. They are then combined into a high-resolution complex-valued image by solving a phase-retrieval problem. The object ...

We describe the first gradient methods on Riemannian manifolds to achieve accelerated rates in the non-convex case. Under Lipschitz assumptions on the Riemannian gradient and Hessian of the cost function, these methods find approximate first-order critical ...

In recent years, the conjecture on the instability of Anti-de Sitter spacetime, put forward by Dafermos-Holzegel (Dynamic instability of solitons in 4 + 1 dimesnional gravity with negative cosmological constant, 2006. https://www.dpmms.cam.ac.uk/similar to ...

With wind power providing an increasing amount of electricity worldwide, the quantification of its spatio-temporal variations and the related uncertainty is crucial for energy planners and policy-makers. Here, we propose a methodological framework which (1 ...

This article proposes a new clock-dependent gain-scheduled dynamic output feedback controller for delayed linear parameter varying systems with piecewise constant parameters. The proposed controller guarantees Script capital L2-performance. By employing a ...

Classical Serre-Tate theory describes deformations of ordinary abelian varieties. It implies that every such variety has a canonical lift to characteristic zero and equips the base of its universal deformation with a Frobenius lifting and canonical multipl ...

We consider rank-1 lattices for integration and reconstruction of functions with series expansion supported on a finite index set. We explore the connection between the periodic Fourier space and the non-periodic cosine space and Chebyshev space, via tent ...

We construct reduced order models for two classes of globally coupled multi-component oscillatory systems, selected as prototype models that exhibit synchronization. These are the Kuramoto model, considered both in its original formulation and with a suita ...

It is possible to construct Levy white noises as generalized random processes in the sense of Gel'fand and Vilenkin, or as an independently scattered random measures introduced by Rajput and Rosinski. In this article, we unify those two approaches by exten ...

Suppose that the vertices of a graph G are colored with two colors in an unknown way. The color that occurs on more than half of the vertices is called the majority color (if it exists), and any vertex of this color is called a majority vertex. We study th ...

In this paper, we propose algorithms that leverage a known community structure to make group testing more efficient. We consider a population organized in disjoint communities: each individual participates in a community, and its infection probability depe ...

This work develops novel rational Krylov methods for updating a large-scale matrix function f(A) when A is subject to low-rank modifications. It extends our previous work in this context on polynomial Krylov methods, for which we present a simplified conve ...
