This thesis investigates novel single-molecule luminescence phenomena at their inherent, sub-molecular length scale. The microscopic understanding of luminescence processes will be crucial for the continued improvement of organic optoelectronic and semicon ...

We discuss our recently reported femtosecond (fs) X-ray emission spectroscopy results on the ligand dissociation and recombination in nitrosylmyoglobin (MbNO) in the context of previous studies on ferrous haem proteins. We also present a preliminary accoun ...

With the advent of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) time-resolved X-ray spectroscopic techniques have advanced to the femtosecond regime. These are element selective techniques which offer unique insight into the electronic and chemical environment and d ...

The relaxation of photoexcited nanosystems is a fundamental process of light–matter interaction. Depending on the couplings of the internal degrees of freedom, relaxation can be ultrafast, converting electronic energy in a few fs, or slow, if the energy is ...

This study focused on the effects of ozonation on the photochemical and photophysical properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM). Upon ozonation, a decrease in DOM absorbance was observed in parallel with an increase in singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) and fluore ...

Highly photoluminescent hybrid lead halide perovskite nanoparticles have recently attracted a wide interest in the context of high-stake applications, such as light emitting diodes (LEDs), light emitting transistors and lasers. In addition, they constitute ...

Dysfunctions in tissue metabolism can be detected at early stages by oxygen partial pressure (pO(2)) measurement. The measurement of emission lifetimes offers very promising and non-invasive approach to estimate pO(2) in vivo. This study compares two exten ...

Given its high sensitivity and non-destructive nature, fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy is widely used to differentiate changes and transformations of dissolved or water-extracted organic matter (OM) in natural environments. The s ...

A series of cationic iridium(III) complexes with two carbene-based cyclometalating ligands and five different NN bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline ancillary ligands is presented. For the first time in the frame of a rarely studied class of bis(heterole ...

A method for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of a sample comprises preparation of the sample and carrying out an NMR spectroscopy measurement. Preparation includes excitation of long lived coherences (LLC) between the singlet state S0 and the ...

Functional imaging of biological cells and organs is one of the key techniques that drives new discoveries in life science research and medicine. In this thesis novel concepts for functional imaging at high spatial and temporal resolution are presented. In ...

Simple but powerful chemosensors were developed by taking advantage of self-assembly processes. First, we will describe a turn-on fluorescent sensor for the pharmacologically important lithium ion. The sensor can be used in purely aqueous solution, and it ...

Tunneling electrons from a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) induce luminescence from C-60 and C-70 molecules forming fullerene nanocrystals grown on ultrathin NaCl films on Au(111). Intramolecular. uorescence and phosphorescence associated with the tran ...

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) of superficial bladder cancer may cause damages to the normal surrounding bladder wall. Prevention of these is important for bladder healing. We studied the influence of photosensitizer concentration, irradiation parameters, and ...

We present a 5 m long spectrometer for soft x rays to be used at a synchrotron radiation beamline for resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in the 400-1600 eV energy range. It is based on a variable line spacing spher ...

Spectroscopy basically consists in retrieving information on any system through the use of optical information as a function of wavelength. The examples are countless, and the field is of major importance. For example, the structure of the hydrogen atom ha ...

The pharmacokinetics of the photosensitizer 5,10,15,20-tetra(m-hydroxyphenyl)chlorin (mTHPC) was investigated in the plasma of 20 patients by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The temporal behavior was characterized by a rapid decrease in concn. du ...

We describe a new fluorescence imaging device for clin. cancer photodetection in hollow organs in which the tumor/normal tissue contrast is derived from the fluorescence lifetime of endogenous or exogenous fluorochromes. This fluorescence lifetime contrast ...

The influence of the time interval between dye administration and detection by fluorescence microscopy was assessed in "early" squamous cell carcinomas of the cheek pouch mucosa and different healthy tissues of the Syrian hamster. Following intracardiac ...
