Two related methods for inverting line-integrated measurements are presented in this research paper in the context of the recent deuterium-tritium experiments in the JET tokamak. Unlike traditional methods of tomography, these methods rely on making use of ...

This article presents the Lightning Performance (LP) assessment of a realistic portion of the Italian distribution network with the use of probability distributions for lightning parameters inferred from local data recorded by a Lightning Location System ( ...

Purpose To compare motion tracking by 2 modern methods (fat navigators [FatNavs] and Moir' phase tracking [MPT]) as well as their performance for retrospective correction of very high resolution acquisitions. Methods A direct comparison of FatNavs and MPT ...

We introduce a distributionally robust maximum likelihood estimation model with a Wasserstein ambiguity set to infer the inverse covariance matrix of a p-dimensional Gaussian random vector from n independent samples. The proposed model minimizes the worst ...

In this thesis, we focus on the problem of achieving practical privacy guarantees in machine learning (ML), where the classic differential privacy (DP) fails to maintain a good trade-off between user privacy and data utility. Differential privacy guarantee ...

In modern electric power networks with fast evolving operational conditions, assessing the impact of contingencies is becoming more and more crucial. Contingencies of interest can be roughly classified into nodal power disturbances and line faults. Despite ...

This paper considers unbalanced multiphase distribution systems with generic topology and different load models, and extends the Z-bus iterative load-flow algorithm based on a fixed-point interpretation of the AC load-flow equations. Explicit conditions fo ...

Matsubara dynamics is the quantum-Boltzmann-conserving classical dynamics which remains when real-time coherences are taken out of the exact quantum Liouvillian [T. J. H. Hele et al., J. Chem. Phys. 142, 134103 (2015)]; because of a phase-term, it cannot b ...

Transient electromagnetic fields can couple to overhead power transmission and distribution lines, causing damage to the connected equipment. In real cases, incident electromagnetic fields exhibit different spatial and temporal waveform distributions along ...

A methodology to perform a rigorous verification of Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulations is presented, both for assessing the correct implementation of the model equations (code verification), and evaluating the numerical uncertainty affecting the simulation ...

Medium-voltage direct-current (MVDC) distribution is a possible replacement due to the advancements in power electronic technologies, for existing medium-voltage ac distribution on ships. The new systems based on MVDC are expected to increase fuel efficien ...

We consider the problem of controlling the electrical state of a three-phase distribution network by enforcing the explicit power injection. More precisely, we assume that the power injection is constrained to reside in some uncertainty set, and the proble ...

In order to have a better closure for magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations, a common approach is to obtain the ion fluid pressure tensor by directly computing the moments of an ion distribution function, obtained by a Particle-in-cell (PIC) solver of the V ...

A technique to measure in situ the behavior of the magnetic susceptibility vs. temperature, chi(T), for a cable-in-conduit-conductor (CICC) in the SULTAN test facility has been developed. The same kind of measurements are performed for the corresponding fr ...

Consensus is at the heart of fault-tolerant distributed computing systems. Much research has been devoted to developing algorithms for this particular problem. This paper presents a semi-automatic verification approach for asynchronous consensus algorithms ...

Model specification is an integral part of any statistical inference problem. Several model selection techniques have been developed in order to determine which model is the best one among a list of possible candidates. Another way to deal with this questi ...

The large variability of the drop size distribution (DSD) in space and time must be taken into account to improve remote sensing of precipitation. The ability to simulate a large number of 2D fields of DSD sharing the same statistical properties provides a ...

In the first part of this thesis we are interested in the asymptotic performance analysis of Non-Binary Low-Density Parity-Check (NBLDPC) codes over the Binary Erasure Channel (BEC) decoded via the suboptimal Belief Propagation (BP) decoder as well as the ...

The very existence of urban formations on all inhabited continents and throughout the history of mankind since the 3rd millennium B.C. leads to suppose a tendency of some structured societies to maximize interaction by minimizing physical distance. Were th ...

To aid assessments of climate change impacts on water related activities in the case study regions (CSRs) of the EC funded project SWURVE, estimates of uncertainty in climate model data need to be developed. In this paper, two methods to estimate uncertain ...
